The Batman has found another one of its villainous cast members in the form of Paul Dano as The Riddler.
It’s been quite a week for fans of Batman and all those excited to see Matt Reeves take on the caped crusader in 2021’s The Batman.
First, after weeks of speculation and speculative lists, we got the confirmation that Zoe Kravitz would be joining Robert Pattinson’s Batman as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.
Then, last night we learned that Jonah Hill — who had been rumored to be close to nabbing the part of either Penguin or The Riddler — had exited Matt Reeves’ film for reasons unknown (though it was rumored to be over payment for the role).
And while it seemed like his exit would lead to weeks more speculation about who would be cast in either role, it looks like WB had an actor waiting in the wings.
Variety revealed earlier today that Paul Dano will play the villain The Riddler in The Batman.
Though we don’t know much about the story of The Batman, nor how major of a role The Riddler will play in what’s been rumored to be quite a stacked rogues gallery in the film, we do know that Paul Dano’s version of The Riddler will stand apart from previous on-screen iterations of the character.
While The Riddler has always appeared in the comics and on-screen adaptations as Edward Nygma — making his name E. Nigma — Variety reports that Dano’s version of the character will instead be called Edward Nashton.
Paul Dano as The Riddler is a great bit of casting that should excite fans of the character and the franchise. The casting comes on the heels of Dano’s recent Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora.
Much like Pattinson, he’s done great work in a series of well-loved indie films, like Love and Mercy, There Will be Blood and Prisoners.
Warner Bros. will open The Batman in theaters June 25, 2021.
