About ‘Temporary’ by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry:
The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen is the one who can ruin everything…
The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.
And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.
I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful — pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.
But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.
And it works–if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can’t afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.
Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo…
‘Temporary’ by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry review:
Since I like to be honest, I’ll admit that I was a bit nervous going into this book because I’ve never read anything by Sarah Mayberry before. Looking back on that nervousness seems silly now that I’ve finished this wonderful novel.
I was hooked from the very first chapter and didn’t want to put it down until I was finished. In fact, I stayed up late to finish it — a feat that is becoming typical whenever I get a book where Sarina Bowen is involved.
Anyone familiar with my reviews knows that I’m always on the lookout for strong heroines, which Sarina and Sarah really delivered with Grace. Being a strong heroine doesn’t mean the character is perfect; they’re flawed and make mistakes, but in the face of adversity they keep on fighting.
Grace is the perfect example of what I want in a heroine. By no means has she had an easy life. She’s had to put aside her dreams in order to survive and help her sister. Getting through college meant changing her major to something more practical than her dream education, plus working when she wasn’t in school.
After graduation she’s still struggling to get a full time position, never mind follow her dreams. And she’s often putting her own desires on the back burner in order to give her sister the best life she can.
Add on to this that she has abandonment issues from her mother and ex, so it’s inspiring to see Grace ready to take on the world each morning. She’s realistic and yet still expects the best from people even when many close to her have let her down in the past.
Callan is your typical playboy who’s always down for a fun time, except that he’s not at all. Being raised by a wealthy and powerful family has its downsides, as Callan quickly learned.
Putting on a mask of the pretty boy just looking for a lay becomes second nature as he tries to guard his own heart from others. Even though he always expects the worst from others, that doesn’t stop him from trying to help the less fortunate when he can.
Similar to Grace, Callan has had to deal with his own type of abandonment issues. Not only did his parents divorce, but his father was more interested in taking his money and having his own fun away from his children.
This left Callan and his sister with their mother, who was more interested in making the family business unstoppable than she was in parenting. Callan quickly had to learn that his mother expected a certain image and wasn’t afraid to break her son’s heart in order to make sure it happened.
With all of the emotional baggage these two have going on, they are the last people you’d expect to get together. But when circumstances throw them together, it quickly becomes obvious just how well they mesh.
While Callan tries to deal with the blow of his uncle’s death, and deal with his family trying to dampen the man’s legacy, the Aussie bachelor can’t help but begin to fall for Grace, who seems to be the only one willing to help him despite the problems it may cause her.
Together they learn how to overcome all of the problems thrown their way and in the process they go from strangers to something much more meaningful. Even though there is a lot going on, Sarina and Sarah still manage to slip some humor into the book to even things out.
By the end of the novel, I was wishing there was even more to read and I can’t wait to see if these two write together again!
