Teen Wolf season 3, episode 21, titled “The Fox and the Wolf,” begins with a flashback to 1943. A pair of soldiers are dumping bodies in the middle of a field, getting ready to burn them. One of the soldiers keeps asking the other riddles, but the second soldier doesn’t have any interest in them.
That’s when the nogitsune shows up and kills them both.
Mr. Yukimura is in his classroom on a Saturday. He kills a fly, and it’s as if this calls forward Stiles, as that’s when he strolls into the room. He’s looking for the blades Mrs. Yukimura uses to create the oni. Mr. Yukimura won’t tell him where they are, but Stiles resurrects the fly and it goes down the teacher’s throat. “They always talk,” Stiles says.
Kira and Scott are looking at a picture from 1943, and the woman looks just like Kira. They’re interrupted by the news of Kira’s father, and they have to bring a special mushroom to Mrs. Yukimura in order to save him. That’s when we learn that Kira’s mother is actually 900 years old and knows a lot more than she originally let on.
Kira hands her mother a sword, and Mrs. Yukimura says the blade was shattered the last time it was used — which was on a nogitsune. We also learn that Oak Creek was a real camp, but all records about it were destroyed.
Oh, and the nogitsune actually came from Mrs. Yukimura.
In another flashback, we see how Noshiko, Kira’s mother, steals things from the soldiers. The soldiers are beginning to catch on, but she doesn’t care. She just wants to help her family and friends. Luckily, she has an accomplice in one of the medics, whom she has a relationship with.
Derek and Chris are, thankfully, out of jail. The Sheriff is the one that let them out, and he takes them to his office to talk. It turns out that the nogitsune was playing tricks on everyone when Stiles got tested for frontotemporal dementia. The results were exactly the same as Claudia’s, and therefore, Stiles isn’t actually sick!
Although that makes us feel loads better, Stiles isn’t out of hot water just yet. Sheriff Stilinski asks Chris and Derek for help. They have to find out how to outfox the fox. Joined by Allison, they all go off in different directions to start laying the trap.
In the flashback, we learn that the doctor at the internment camp is selling medicine on the black market while the residents are dying of disease. That’s when the Japanese Americans go after the doctor and soldiers, and a riot ensues.
We find out that the calm and stoic old woman who tried to tell Noshiko to lay low is actually a werewolf. One of the soldiers hits her, and she turns, suddenly out of control. She throws a bottle of alcohol with a lit rag at Noshiko’s boyfriend and lights him on fire.
Switching gears, we get a quiet moment between Sheriff Stilinski and Allison where he praises her for her strength and she tells him she’s always scared. That’s when the sheriff gets a notification that someone is breaking into his house. It’s Stiles, and he knows the cameras are there.
The soldiers start firing back at the crowd in the next flashback. Noshiko is hit, and her boyfriend Rhys is badly burned. Rhys dies, and Noshiko seems dead, so they’re piled in the back of a truck with the other bodies as they’re hauled off to be burned. The doctor and the other soldiers are going to cover everything up.
Noshiko wants revenge on the soldiers, so she calls forward the dark spirit of the nogitsune to possess her. Unfortunately, it doesn’t want to do exactly what she’s asking. Instead, it possesses Rhys, and that is how the bandaged man is born.
Upon returning to Oak Creek, Noshiko sees everyone dead. She knows she has to go after the nogitsune. She finds him, and tries to fight him off, but it’s too difficult. That is, until the old woman, the werewolf, joins her and they kill the nogitsune together.
Back in present-day, we learn that Kira is a thunder kitsune. She helps to put the sword back together, and her mother gives it to her to keep. Kira doesn’t want it, but her mother insists. She thinks it’s the only way to kill Stiles, and that killing Stiles is really the only way to save him.
Sheriff Stilinski, Allison, Derek, and Chris go to Stiles and find a coded message from the nogitsune in the pieces left on his chess board. The Sheriff shows his prowess as a detective when he figures out what the nogitsune is after. He says they need to trick the trickster.
Right before the episode ends, the group heads over to Derek’s loft, where Stiles is waiting for them.
