Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has officially confirmed that he will not be directing Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.
Fans were left wondering what the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise was after Marvel fired director James Gunn. While many Gunn fans just wanted to see Gunn reinstated, others started looking to who could take over the films. Taika Waititi, director for Thor: Ragnarok, seemed like a pretty natural fit to a lot of fans.
Well, if you were hoping to see a Waititi-led Guardians movie, don’t get your hopes up. At FX TCA, Deadline reports that Taika Waititi made it clear that he has no intention or desire to direct Guardians 3.
“For me, those are James (Gunn)’s films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now. It feels kind of awkward.”
It is understandable Waititi would feel that way. The actors from the film have expressed their loyalty to Gunn, and Gunn’s own brother, Sean, is even in the cast. It’s certainly going to be an uncomfortable job at first for whoever Marvel ends up hiring.
But don’t think we’ve seen the last of Waititi in the MCU. He assured fans that he does very much want to do another Marvel movie, telling Deadline, “I’m still hanging out with those guys (Marvel) and talking about new stuff.”
After he brought so much life to the Thor franchise, we can only assume (and hope) he’s in talks to direct another Thor flick. Of course, we don’t yet know if Thor will survive the events of Avengers: Endgame, so we’ll likely have to wait until after that film releases to know both Thor and Waititi’s future in the MCU.
