When Chronicle first hit theaters back in February, it was hailed as an exceedingly fresh and original take on a potentially difficult film to make successfully. From the actual execution of the film, to the marketing strategy that took advantage of social media and the internet age to make the film a $100 million success. That being said, it’s interesting to see whether the home video release of Chronicle can live up to the example the theatrical release set.
Variety has learned that Max Landis, scribe of the highly successful sci-fi Chronicle – has sold his original pitch, Woogles, to Timur Bekmambetov’s banner Bazelevs. Landis and Bekmabetov will produce the “edgy family adventure” feature, with Teen Wolf scribes Nick Antosca and Ned Vizzini writing the script, based on a story by Landis.
Briefly: It’s been just over a month since director Josh Trank and screenwriter Max Landis took Hollywood by storm with their low-budget, found-footage film Chronicle, which managed to gross over $100 million on a tiny budget with no big talent attached. Now news has arisen that Landis will pen a sequel to the film for Fox.
Chronicle is a rare movie — if not a unique one — in that it takes the improbable, at times ridiculous, premise of superheroes and spins every plot construct we’ve come to associate with this particular genre on its head. I struggle classifying this film as a “superhero” movie, if anything it’s more of an “anti-superhero” movie, as it cleverly sets out to tell a story of what would actually happen if teenagers gained super-human powers. Hint: it doesn’t involve crime-fighting.
