Just one day after the Gotham Awards were held, the 28th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards are set with a particularly strong slate of nominees, led by Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, and Ben Zeitlin’s Beast of the Southern Wild.
There is nothing new about the premise for Smashed, a drama about a couple’s battle with alcoholism, but the execution is anything but conventional. With a truly tender touch, director and co-writer James Ponsoldt injects a refreshing energy into the film, which builds upon real-life experiences of co-writer Susan Burke’s own battles with alcoholism. What really makes this film stand out, however, is a breathtaking performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead that is truly one of the best I’ve seen in years.
The Beauty Inside is a new online series from Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), who has partnered with Intel and Toshiba for a “social film” that stars the audience, along with a few names such as Topher Grace and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It’s a fascinating project, the first episode of which has been released online.
