Supernatural star Jared Padalecki recently revealed what fans can expect from the 200th episode.
We learned from Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver at the Television Critics Association press tour last week that that series’ 200th episode will be “musical-ish.”
“I think it’ll be one of the more amusing and engaging episodes we’ve done in a while,” Carver teased. “We’re going pretty meta. I would just describe it as something of a love letter to our fans, and there will be songs.”
Now we know what the context of the musical episode will be. Speaking with Zap2It, Padalecki reveals that the episode will echo season 5’s “The Real Ghostbusters,” which took place at a convention for Carver Edlund’s Supernatural books.
“We’re not at a convention, but we’re at a place where they’re doing a play based on the Chuck Shurley books,” he explains. Chuck Shurley is, of course, the real name of Carver Edlund — a pen name that was created in honor of Supernatural writers Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund.
“So not only are these books based on our lives, now people are doing a play based on these books, and someone is haunting it, so we go and try to investigate what’s going on at this play, based on the books about our lives.”
That’s meta, all right.
“It’s certainly a direct shout-out to the fans and a thank you for their years of commitment to us,” Padalecki adds. “They are the reason we’re here.”
The episode, which will be titled “Fan Fiction” and written by Robbie Thompson, will be the fifth of the season.
Supernatural is no stranger to meta episodes, from including the aforementioned book series and convention to sending the brothers to an alternate universe in which there is a television series called Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
Supernatural season 10 premieres Tuesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
