Farewell
We open with Dean and Sam remembering Charlie as they build a pyre and give her a hunter’s funeral. As Sam apologizes to her, Dean cuts him off with cold words about Charlie’s death being Sam’s fault let’s ignore the number of times Charlie was explicitly shown making her own choice and that Sam should be the one on the pyre. That may be the coldest thing one brother has said to another in the series, Mark or no Mark.
Sam fires back that he carries the guilt for that but won’t apologize for trying to save Dean, who is the only person he has left. Dean leaves on a revenge-fueled quest to end the Stynes.
Dean’s rampage
Dean uses traffic cam footage to track the Styne family to Shreveport, Louisiana. When the Impala pulls into town, Dean is stopped by the local police. The cops ask Dean to step out of the car, citing him for a busted tail light — that one of the cops busts on the spot. Dean nearly attacks the cop, so his partner arrests him for attempting to assault an officer.
At the police department, the arresting officer looks over Dean’s many fake IDs. Dean, though, coaxes him into getting close enough to take him down and get the handcuff keys. Dean then finds the sheriff, who reveals that the Stynes own the town, including the police.
Meanwhile, a younger Styne, Cyrus, is introduced; he’s bookish and opposed to his family’s cruel ways — and the parallel to Sam couldn’t be any clearer.
The Styne patriarch, Monroe, forces Cyrus to help harvest his bully for spare parts — including a new arm for Eldon, who lost it in the bunker. Eldon brings word of the bunker, so Eldon, Cyrus, and another Styne, Roscoe, are sent to collect any useful artifacts and burn the rest.
After escaping the police, Dean heads for the Styne family home. He takes down all the outside guards, but is quickly taken captive once he enters. Monroe and another Styne, Eli, plan to harvest Dean. As a man who can’t die thanks to the Mark, Dean is intriguing as a lab rat. However, Dean takes an opening before the cutting can begin to quickly kill Monroe, Eli, and the nurse before killing the rest of the Stynes present then heading back home.
At the bunker, Cyrus is interested in the books and comes across a picture of the Winchesters and Bobby. However, Eldon starts dousing things in gasoline. Roscoe then stumbles in, a knife in his back. As he hits the ground, a blood-stained Dean walks in. Eldon taunts him about Charlie, and Dean shoots him in the head during his villain monologue.
Cyrus pleads for his life, saying he hates his family. Dean doesn’t have to do this, but Dean replies that he does and shoots the kid. The foreshadowing for Dean’s inevitable confrontation with Sam is obvious.
Cas, who had been following Dean, arrives then. Cas tries to talk Dean down, but it’s to no avail. Dean uses his super-strength to beat the snot out of Cas, despite the fact that he has his grace back. Dean pulls out an angel blade and stabs… the floor next to Cas’ head. He warns Cas and Sam to stay away from him and leaves the bunker.
Sam’s struggle
After Dean heads out on his rampage, Sam fills Cas in about Charlie. He’s about to shut down the operation when he gets the email Charlie sent him with her notes right before she died. Rowena confirms Charlie cracked the code, and after some deliberation, Sam decides to continue with the plan. He asks Cas to keep an eye on Dean, but Rowena refuses to translate the codex until Sam has fulfilled his part of the bargain — killing Crowley.
Sam fakes a call for help from Dean and sends Crowley an address. When Crowley arrives, Sam shoots him with a bullet engraved with a Devil’s Trap. He then puts a souped up hex bag, courtesy of Rowena, in Crowley’s pocket, which fells him. Crowley appears to be dying slowly, and he bemoans his fate after trying to be the good guy. Sam retorts that he’ll never forget the evil that Crowley has done.
Crowley suddenly agrees. His eyes flash red as he admits he enjoyed all the evil he’s done. Power emanates from him as he gets to his feet, knocks Sam through a wall, and burns the hex bag. He kicks the demon-killing knife from Sam’s grasp and threatens to kill Sam. However, he doesn’t, telling Sam to remember that he’s only alive because Crowley allowed it. He also tells Sam to warn Rowena that she’ll never see Crowley coming.
Sam calls Rowena with an update and asks for help, but she tells him to figure it out. However, when Cas calls with an update on Dean’s rampage, he immediately heads back to the bunker — but misses the big confrontation.
