On Supergirl season 5, episode 4, Malefic is still running loose around National City, causing trouble for our super friends. Meanwhile, Kara’s suspicions about CatCo’s newest reporter, William, grow stronger, and Lena continues on with her plans.
We obviously had a chance to watch Supergirl season 5, episode 4 early, and this is one you don’t want to miss. Supergirl is not wasting any time this year. We’ve put together a few teases and a spoiler-free review of the episode to tide you over until October 27 at 9 p.m. ET!
‘Supergirl’ season 5, episode 4 review
Supergirl season 5, episode 4 is another great episode, continuing to build on the story threads that have already been introduced thus far this season. Every episode fits together, and if it weren’t for one storyline in this episode, I’d say the entire season has been very well-planned, thoughtful, and cohesive.
Brainy and Lena
A very unique pairing we haven’t seen much of before is Lena and Brainy, as they work together to solve a problem crucial to stopping Malefic from wreaking any more havoc or harm upon National City. With their very high levels of intelligence, it’s kind of a war for one of them to accept help from the other. It’s kind of like a much friendlier version of Lena and Lex working together.
Like we have over the last three episodes, the writers are clearly very aware that the Supergirl cast all loves each other, and they’re finally exploring and revisiting some different relationships that we hadn’t seen (much of) before, like Kelly and J’onn or Nia and J’onn. Now, it’s Brainy and Lena’s turn.
It’s made even more interesting by the other things that are happening in their lives when they come together. Brainy really struggles with what happened with Nia, while Lena isn’t done with her plan just yet…
Alex versus J’onn
It’s safe to say that for most of the episode, Alex and J’onn are on different sides when it comes to Malefic. And, for at least part of the episode, I’m on Alex’s side. It’s not a new story, but kind of a new twist on it, which should get fans thinking.
My only concern is, after the first four episodes of Supergirl season 5, I’m not really sure what Alex’s story is this season. It kind of seems, at least a little bit, as though Alex is Kelly’s love interest and not the second lead character of the show. That said, she gets a decent amount of time on-screen.
Kelly and James
The Olsen siblings did, in fact, depart National City with Malefic at large and a threat to Kelly’s life. To keep themselves busy, they take a stroll down memory lane, which helps James conclude his (very short amount of time) soul-searching.
The one reason I’m sad that Mehcad Brooks (James) will be leaving Supergirl this season is because of the recently introduced relationship between Kelly and James. We’ve barely seen this explored, and it’s clear they have such a deep understanding for one another, and such a great sibling relationship that rivals Kara and Alex’s. We see a bit more of that as Kelly and James recall their past and think about what once was.
Kelly and James’ story together works quite well for the episode, but the path James is on alone during this episode seems a bit out of place. It’s still very good, but as I mentioned before, it’s the one thing this season that didn’t seem like it fit.
Kara’s hunch
The Girl of Steel is never wrong. After being suspicious of William since he first arrived at CatCo, Kara takes a cue from William and begins to investigate him (like he did to her), leading her to something very interesting. Everything about their dynamic changes in this episode… and I honestly don’t know whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing.
We also see Kara helping out the DEO quite a bit in this episode, and it’s so refreshing that she didn’t go back to work for the organization as one of their employees after everything that happened on Supergirl season 4.
‘Supergirl’ 5X04 final thoughts
Supergirl season 5, episode 4 is another solid episode. The show’s quality has vastly improved since Supergirl season 3, and I’m beyond hyped to see where this season and the various stories go. While I wouldn’t say this was my favorite episode, as I wasn’t the biggest fan of one major side-plot, it did contain some of my favorite character moments of the season.
I have so much more to say, especially about Kara and Lena’s stories, but can’t say much more outside of my review (which will be published after the episode airs). For now, I’ll leave you with this: During a conversation between Kara and Lena, the term “super friend” is dropped by one of them.
Oh, and one more thing, the ending of this episode is a game-changer. I could not be more excited to see the story continue over to Supergirl season 5, episode 5.
