Suits season 5 continues tonight with “No Refill,” Harvey’s panic attack comes at an inopportune time and Mike fights for some respect from Robert Zane.
At the top of the episode, Jessica reiterates how she is in no mood for an internal power struggle between Harvey and Jack, and after last season’s Louis debacle, we cannot blame her. However, she does not seem to have any problem inciting an external power struggle between her firm and Robert Zane, after Mike drags him into a huge case that he cannot handle alone.
Her goal is to keep Robert in check when working with Mike — commanding him to treat Mike like a partner, which he obviously scoffs at. Mike, through all of this, just wants respect from this man who will so become his father by the power vested in a minister from the state of New York. It’s not until the end of the episode, when he leans into Robert’s plan to go to trial, that we see an inkling of a partnership growing between them.
Harvey sees Robert and Mike working together, and it reminds him all too much of Donna’s allegiance swaying over to Louis. This man’s power — and sanity — has been slipping this season, and after five seasons at the top, he’s going to do anything he can to hold onto it. But it’s a dangerous path he’s put himself on — unintentionally. No one asks for panic attacks. No one wants to lose control of their heart rate or their body temperature and no one especially wants to be faced with an enemy trying to claim victory in the midst of all this. Unfortunately for Harvey, that’s exactly what happens.
After a particularly tense episode for Harvey, the scene plays out in interesting fashion: a hand-held camera (to give a “shakey” real-life effect) cuts to Mike waiting for Harvey in his office. Harvey, white as a sheet and vision beginning to blur, tells Mike that he isn’t having a heart attack, it’s a panic attack.
As Harvey is grabbing for a water, Jack waltzes in as he’s been doing throughout the episode, telling Harvey that he’s been dragged into the war whether he wants to or not. Harvey having to put on such a brave face in this moment is so hard, but he manages, and soon dictates to Mike to take the lead with this one. Mike Ross is ready to step up to the plate.
Thank goodness, because Harvey has gone back to his therapist for help, and oh boy he could use it. Tonight, he discovers the unrelenting hurt and tension he’s felt against Donna for months now, and he let loose. It’s a powerful moment for “Donna” (Sarah Rafferty) as she’s acting as a part of Harvey’s imagination, meaning every word she says hurts a little bit more. Everything is a little bit more bitingly sarcastic. It helps Harvey, though. It’s like wiping away the rose-colored lenses and getting to the root of some problems. Let’s hope he keeps it up this time.
Meanwhile, Jessica has Rachel look over a speech for a highly esteemed doctor — looking for potential weaknesses. What Jessica doesn’t tell her, but Rachel figures out anyway, is that the speech is really for Jessica. The two have a sweet moment at the end of the episode where Jessica admits that she sees a lot of herself in Rachel. They’re certainly very different women, but both are extraordinary competent and don’t suffer fools. We hope for more scenes with them together in the near future.
Charles Barkley also has a small cameo in tonight’s “No Refill.” After taking some hilariously worthy selfies with Jack, he and Harvey duke it out over drinks. Turns out, they have a bit of a blackmailing relationship.
In the world of Louis and Donna…
Oh, Louis and his insecurities. He tries to give Donna a music box as a promise that he won’t try to screw her over again. Donna hands it back to him, saying he will not be able to keep that promise because he will mess up again. That’s life, friends. Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
Are Louis and Donna endgame? Should Suits continue on for another decade, will they always be boss and secretary? We know Louis is in love with her — would she ever reciprocate? Particularly after her tumultuous relationship with Harvey, it is hard to say. She’s strong, but we also think she wants to have a meaningful romantic relationship.
