‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ publishing campaign asks: What scares the Jedi?

#ProjectLuminous has finally been revealed. Enter the era of Star Wars: The High Republic.

After months (and months) of anticipation, the secret is finally out. StarWars.com officially announced today that the new era of galactic publishing is upon us.

Welcome to the High Republic, a series of interconnected books and comics that will explore the galaxy as it was 200 years before the Prequel Trilogy. Guided by authors Claudia Grey, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule, the stories of the High Republic began by pondering a legendary line from Obi-Wan Kenobi.

What did it really mean for the Jedi Knights to be “he guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic” for “over a thousand generations?” What dangers would they face, and what triumphs could they earn?

The Luminous writers found the spark of an answer in a question posed by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

“What,” she asked, “scares the Jedi?”

Though the Galaxy Far, Far Away enjoyed an era of peace at the time of Star Wars: The High Republic, plenty of danger still lurks in dark corners. Envisioning the borders of the Republic as an irregular patchwork of Wild West-like territories, the Luminous writers pose their Jedi against smugglers, scoundrels, bounty hunters — and a new race called the Nihil.

Their motto? “You can’t take it with you, but we can take it from you.”

Star Wars: The High Republic will be a coordinated campaign with material aimed at a diverse variety of age groups, from children to adults. Both comics and book publishing will be involved, with a long list of media partners participating.

The first installations of Star Wars: The High Republic stories will be contained under the umbrella title “Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi.” Currently announced book projects include Into the Dark, a Young Adult novel by Claudia Gray, Light of the Jedi, an adult novel by Charles Soule, and the Middle-Grade A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland.

On the comics side, Star Wars: The High Republic by Cavan Scott will be published by Marvel, and Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures by Daniel José Older will be published by IDW.

Star Wars: The High Republic will begin hitting shelves in August 2020.
