Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are officially taking the reigns of Star Wars.
Disney CEO (and possibly most powerful man in the world) Bob Iger confirmed the future of Star Wars today.
Speaking at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit, Iger announced that the next Star Wars film after The Rise of Skywalker will come from David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said. “And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
The first new film will arrive in 2022, as indicated by a recent announcement from Disney spacing three new Star Wars films in the next decade around new installments of James Cameron’s Avatar series.
Fan speculation has posited that the new film (or films) will detail the Knights of the Old Republic era of Star Wars history, playing into Benioff and Weiss’ established bona fides in tales of gallantry and battle. However, no solid information on the new material has been confirmed.
The new set of films from Benioff and Weiss, the creators and showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones, was announced by Lucasfilm last February. Lucasfilm had also announced a new film trilogy coming from The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson, but that project, if it is still in development, remains shrouded in mystery.
At the time of the initial announcement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy called Benioff and Weiss “some of the best storytellers working today.”
“Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting,” Kennedy said.
Benioff and Weiss are particularly prominent in the public eye as Game of Thrones comes to a dramatic, if controversial close. The series finale airs this week on HBO.
