Star Trek: Picard may have yet to make its series premiere, but it has already been renewed for a second season by CBS All Access.
If you were excited for the upcoming Star Trek: Picard show, then CBS All Access has already given you even more to be excited about!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sci fi drama — which won’t premiere for another month — has already received an informal go-ahead for a second season of the series.
Though CBS All Access has yet to comment on the renewal, according to Variety, news of the renewal became clear when the California Film Commission announced which shows would be receiving tax credits in the upcoming year on Monday morning, with a second season of Star Trek: Picard on the list.
Similar to Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard will drop new episodes weekly for season 1 on CBS All Access and is expected to do the same for the late 2020 or early 2021 penciled in release for season 2. As Star Trek: Picard recently wrapped up its first season, Deadline reports that a season 2 could be starting production as early as next spring.
The show will follow Patrick Stewart’s character Jean-Luc Picard 20 years after the events of his last appearance in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. Stewart previously played the titular character for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Evan Evagora will also star. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
Best-selling author Michael Chabon will serve as showrunner for the first season, but will step away from his duties in the second season, as he recently set an adaptation of his Kavalier and Clay novels at Showtime as part of an overall deal with CBS TV Studios.
Patrick Stewart and CBS’s Star Trek universe chief Alex Kurtzman executive produce alongside showrunner Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Jan. 23, 2020.
