Patrick Stewart recently read the new script for his upcoming Star Trek show, and it got the showrunner feeling pretty emotional.
Most of us felt pretty teary when it was announced that Patrick Stewart was reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series. Both the actor and the character are incredibly beloved, and Trekkies were stoked to see Stewart return to the Star Trek universe.
And apparently, as Deadline reports, showrunner Alex Kurtzman is not exempt to those Picard feels. At a Star Trek: Discovery panel at Paleyfest, Kurtzman was asked what he could tell the audience about the new Picard show. And while he couldn’t reveal a ton of details, he did let the audience know that Stewart has definitely still got it when it comes to playing the iconic character.
“Here’s what I will tell you. I had an amazing experience yesterday. I sat at Patrick’s kitchen table and I heard him read the first episode and I almost cried. It was quite something. He’s at an amazing place in his life. He’s so excited. It’s going to be a very different show from Discovery. The only way this universe, I think, works correctly is if each show is really different and speaks to a different part of Star Trek.”
The show will feature Picard after leaving his role as a Starfleet Captain. As Kurtzman explains, “things have changed for him,” and to return to who he is, Picard will be put “through a gauntlet” to find himself again. However, through all of the identity crisis, Kurtzman assured audiences that he is still, “deeply and fundamentally still Picard.”
Of course, we know all too well that Stewart can easily handle playing a character at their best and worst, as he did for years with Professor X in the X-Men film franchise, ending his run as the iconic character in the amazing Logan. After seeing that incredible character journey, we can only imagine the new depth and emotion time and life experience will help Stewart bring to Picard in this new show.
The Picard show doesn’t yet have an official title or a release date, but it is rumored to release on CBS All Access later in 2019. Let’s hope CBS makes it so!
