Three of the five Spice Girls got together to tease a big announcement coming soon.
It has been 20 years since the Spice Girls released their debut single “Wannabe.” The Spice Girls broke onto the scene and took over the world (literally, with Spice World), marking their place in pop culture history.
Today, three of the five Spice Girls got together to thank fans and tease that they’ve got a big announcement coming soon.
“You’ve stood by us for 20 years, and we want to say a big ‘thank you,'” says Geri Horner (formerly Halliwell) who famously left, essentially marking the end of the girl group in the late ’90s. “We want to celebrate and have a party!” teases an excited Mel B.
A title card is shown in the final seconds of the video that reads, “We hope to tell you soon what you want, what you really, really want.”
Unlike their hugely successful Return of the Spice Girls tour in 2007 and their iconic performance at the 2012 London Olympics, this teaser and strategy feels unsupported and rather organic. The production value of the video seems homemade and in some ways unprofessional.
Also noticeably absent from the video are Sporty Spice Melanie C and Posh Spice Victoria Beckham, who were rumored in recent months to not be participating in any kind of reunion with the other three members.
The video was posted on www.spicegirlsgem.com, which is a play on the three remaining members’ first names (Geri, Emma and Melanie). There were also rumors that the three Spice Girls would reunite and hold auditions for the remaining two vacancies in the 5-piece girl group.
Could we be seeing a brand new and refreshed iteration of the Spice Girls? Is there a new album coming titled “GEM”? Would you be interested in a concert without pop culture icons Sporty and Posh Spice?
