Sly, Bentley, and Murray are ditching the silver screen for the small screen in a Sly Cooper TV show.
Previously announced as a theatrical release to come out in 2016, the Sly Cooper movie never seemed to come around. However, it seems that a Sly Cooper TV show is taking over as the franchise’s animated adventure.
Reports are emerging that 52 11-minute long episodes are being developed by Sony, with a planned air date of October 2019. The first half of the season will air in October, and the second half will begin in July 2020.
An official synopsis from PGS Entertainment reads “Sly Cooper follows the adventures of an irresistibly charismatic raccoon, a modern-day Robin Hood, who restores justice to his city one theft at a time. Mixing humor, action, and a remarkable cast of characters, Sly Cooper promises to be an unforgettable series.”
Technicolor Animation Productions will oversee the series, along with Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The 2016 Sly Cooper movie may have never released as a result of the poor box office yields of the 2016 Ratchet and Clank movie. Sly Cooper is an epic series, and will likely fit in just as well in shorter televised episodic plots as it would a proper movie.
While no television channel has been announced for the Sly Cooper TV series, one could imagine Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network picking up Sly and the gang. Sly Cooper likely spans an audience a bit older than even Disney XD, and would definitely be too mature for the regular Disney Channel.
If the series turns out to be a success, it is likely that the movie, assumedly already made, will eventually air as a TV release. If not, it would be a shame to see all of that hard work in CGI animation go to waste.
Until an official trailer for the Sly Cooper TV show hits, Technicolor Animation seems to still be pimping out the movie trailer that was released in 2014.
