Sleepy Hollow reintroduced another family member on Friday: Ezra Mills, Abbie and Jenny’s father. While we’ve seen him before this was the first time we’ve got to hear his side of the story, and I wonder what he’s excluding from it.
We all remember Henry Crane, so this isn’t the first time that Sleepy Hollow has re-introduced a family member to the drama of the apocalypse. However, for some reason this introduction of Ezra seems different… and I can’t pin point how. But I’ve got a few small ideas.
Both Jenny and Abbie were able to get together with their father at the end of the last episode to discuss their issues with him. He explained to Abbie that as soon as his mother started showing signs of dementia and started acting like she was “living in two realities,” he felt he had to leave. It wasn’t that the craziness was annoying him or making his life harder, but rather he felt responsible for the craziness. Ezra left because he felt like if he did then their mother would get better.
That wasn’t the case at all — their mother continued to hallucinate and eventually died. But we already know the story of how Abbie’s mom died, that’s not what I’m curious about. I’m curious about what part Ezra had in all of this, and if he was aware of the supernatural things going on in her life before her death.
Everything that Ezra tells Abbie in their meeting makes us think that he absolutely had a part in the supernatural plots from the past. He never says anything out right, but if you look into his speech hard enough and you analyze it, it’s almost like he’s screaming at us that he knows exactly what is going on. This is what he told Abbie in their meeting after she says that he has no idea what she’s going through:
“You don’t know a lot about me either, Abbie. One thing I know about our family, your mother’s side and mine, is that we’re strong people. Yeah, I’ve made mistakes. I’ve had the Hell knocked out of me. But I’m still standing. And so will you.”
He was very confident in what he said, and there was no hesitation in his voice when he said it. So let’s break it down a bit.
Bringing up Abbie’s mother’s side of the family alone makes us think that he was aware of her lineage and the magical history there, and then he brings up his own side. If he’s referencing Abbie’s lineage as a witch it’s very possible he’s talking about his own supernatural family background. Then he says that he’s had the Hell knocked out of him, I’m starting to think that he means it more literally than figuratively… given that Abbie has just been to the Underworld, or Hell, or whatever it is they want us to call the place that she got trapped.
Abbie’s father also has a very clear understanding that Abbie is going through something strenous — and his previous conversation with Jenny really didn’t allude to Abbie or her well being (heck, no one but Abbie knows what she’s going through) so the only way he could know that is if he could sense it, or even recognize it from his past. He very clearly wants Abbie to admit that something is wrong, and how on earth would he be able to sense something like that?
Ezra’s actions alone are making me think that his past and his family’s history is going to be a huge part of the rest of the season, but then we have the symbol that Abbie is hallucinating and it all comes full circle for me. Let me just show you why, as posted by the wonderful community of Tumblr:
Inheritance? Family line? Something is absolutely going on here that is deeper than just Ezra Mills popping up out of nowhere. I don’t know about the entire Pandora/The Hidden One theory, but I’m absolutely behind the concept of Ezra being connected to all of this.
With only six more episodes to go until the end of season 3, it’s only a matter of time before we figure out what’s going on… and I seriously hope I’m right.
