Via vehicle advertisements in London on Friday morning, Sherlock series 3’s U.K. air date was announced: January 1, 2014!
The early-January air date for Sherlock series 3 on BBC One is a bit unexpected because the network had said it would air during Christmas.
It was also announced today that episode 2 will air just four days later on January 5, and episode 3 will be broadcast January 12.
Sherlock series 3, episode 1 is titled “The Empty Hearse.” According to the official synopsis for the new series of shows, the drama will pick up two years after the cliffhanger seen at the end of series 2 during which our favorite detective took a dangerous fall.

The synopsis for episode 1 says, “Two years after the devastating events of ‘The Reichenbach Fall’, John appears to have got on with his life. New horizons and romance beckon. But, with London under threat of a devastating terrorist attack, Sherlock is about to take John at his word, staging his resurrection with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it, though, he’s in for a very big surprise.” The script for the premiere episode is written by producer and co-star Mark Gatiss.
Footage from episode 2 was screened for fans at San Diego Comic-Con in July. The scene we got to watch was fantastic and will probably go down in the show’s history as one of the best moments between Sherlock and Watson.
Unfortunately, the show is not going to be premiering at the same time in the United States. PBS will begin airing Sherlock series 3 on January 19.
Episode 2 is titled “The Sign of Three” and episode 3 is “His Last Vow.” Shooting on the series wrapped a couple of months ago.
Those in America will have to make a decision: Watch Sherlock series 3 online or wait until it airs in the U.S.? The problem with waiting for PBS is that you may be spoiled in your Tumblr dashboard or elsewhere online (Hypable will not post spoilers on the home page or in headlines).
