‘The Shannara Chronicles’ canceled at Spike, but don’t lose hope yet

The Shannara Chronicles has been officially canceled by Spike, but that doesn’t mean it won’t return elsewhere.

Shortly after learning Spike had made its decision to cancel The Shannara Chronicles, it was made public that the show is already busy looking for a new place to call home.

No word yet as to where Shannara is actively being shopped around to, but our shortlist for other places we think it might do well on are Freeform, SyFy, Hulu, or Netflix. Fingers crossed one of these platforms picks up the show for a third season.

For the naysayers out there, The Shannara Chronicles isn’t without value. Especially seeing as the rights to the show are likely being bundled with merchandising and interactive rights as well. But there’s no denying that last years sudden move from MTV to Spike messed with the show’s blooming audience.

Show creator Al Gough has made it no secret that he’s been disappointed with the way things have panned out for The Shannara Chronicles so far. Citing mismatched demographics, a poor time slot, and lackluster marketing as reasons for its meager ratings.

We suspect that a lot of Shannara’s future will rest on its digital and streaming performance. Although its live numbers were miserable at best, the target audience leans more toward on demand and streaming services to consume their content.

There are people happily watching this show. Look at its Rotten Tomatoes score and you’ll see a pleased audience exists. But without a enthusiastic home that supports a show fully – it’s an uphill battle to find your audience in a tiresomely competitive environment.
