This episode of Shadowhunters was filled with make-out sessions and downworlders, not to mention some rather intense scenes between Alec and Jace.
The Hotel DuMort
The home of the vamps is very flashy but really did anyone expect anything less? Gold lame couches, museum grade stolen goods and fashionable undead not quite like the hotel in the book. Camille also makes an appearance as the head vamp in charge. This is an interesting twist from the books that works well.
The vamps have some interesting tricks up their sleeves; being able to control people and feeding them their blood which makes them feel intoxicated. Simon falls prey to Camille and a major make out session which by the end of the episode may prove an issue for Simon. Jace mentions only part of how humans change into vampires so the question remains, ‘what does this mean for Simon?’ Rafael proved to be a friend, at least for now, to the shadowhunters.
Simon was perfectly bumbling and anxious after being kidnapped by the vampires. The interactions between Simon and Rafael were very fun to watch. Seriously, the knife scene and the moments that follow are so entertaining.
The Parabatai Bond
Alec continues to be unhappy about Jace’s choices when it comes to Clary. This episode gave a clear picture of the Parabati bond and why Alec dislikes outsiders so much. The Parabati bond is a big deal in the shadowhunter world. The bond represents something stronger than friendship and family. The bound shadowhunters are willing to die for each other and if one should die the other would be left feeling as if a piece of them were missing.
The argument between Jace and Alec in the cemetery was perfect. Alec also showed his softer side when talking to Jace which was nice to see given that he has been so one note angry the last two episodes. Alec needs something more to do than scowl and make fun of mundanes. However, by the end of the episode Jace and Alec are back to arguing about Clary and Alec’s concern about her parentage. There is a bigger issue underneath his bluster but that is clearly for another episode.
Clary and Jace
Clary and Jace spend a good amount of time together in this episode. The romantic vibes are definitely starting to pick up between these two and it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the next few weeks. First there was the training session in the graveyard. Both seemed to be affected by the moment although Jace played it cooler than Clary. Then there was the whole discussion about love in which Jace admits he has never been in love and Clary seems to feel bad for him. But let’s be real, who has Clary been in love with? Clearly not poor Simon, who realizes this by the end of the episode when he thinks Clary is confessing her love but really it is just her gushing over their friendship. Simon seems to finally understand his place in the friend-zone and he doesn’t like the view as Clary and Jace share another smoldering look.
Izzy
Isabelle kills it in this episode. She calls Alec on his crap and pushes his limits when it comes to certain topics. She also isn’t afraid of her sexuality. Izzy visits her seelie boyfriend to gain information about entering The Hotel DuMort. This is a very interesting sequence of events that don’t exist in the books. It is also the first sex scene, kind of, in the series. When we spoke with Emeraude Toubia she discussed Isabelle being comfortable with her sexuality and being a strong female. She definitely showed off both those things in this episode. Isabelle also showed off her ability to fight in body hugging dresses and high heels. The scene with her and Alec playing the distraction to the vampires highlighted how much Izzy likes being a shadowhunter and how good she is at it.
Whether or not the sex scene was necessary is questionable. It was a device used to move the plot forward and introduce the seelie to the growing list of downworlders.
This episode definitely gave us new information regarding the Mortal Cup and why everyone wants it. We also saw a different side of Alec and had some serious make out scenes for a few of the characters. Next week’s episode should be interesting with our first real look at Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn.
