‘Shadow and Bone’ season 2 premiere date, cast, plot and more

Shadow and Bone season 2 is officially a go, and there’s plenty to speculate about while we await any official announcements.

Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s spectacular series has gone over well, both with fans of the books and those who watched the series without any prior knowledge of the source material.

Though I haven’t read the books, it wasn’t hard to find a lot to love when I wrote my Shadow and Bone review because the adaptation did an excellent job of introducing us to this expansive world and its incredible characters.

At the same time, fellow Hypable staff writer Lelanie thought Shadow and Bone delivered for fans of the Six of Crows duology. The series had a little bit of everything for everyone, and neither one of us can wait to see what happens next.

With season 1 garnering plenty of positive feedback, Shadow and Bone season 2 is a done deal. According to Netflix, Shadow and Bone has been renewed.

There is currently no official Shadow and Bone season 2 release date. If the show keeps on schedule, however, it’s likely we could see the sophomore season hit Netflix in late April or early May 2022.

Of course, there’s always a chance the second season could take a little longer to produce, and the ongoing pandemic will certainly have an effect. Even if we have to wait until late 2022 or early 2023, it’ll be worth it because I know Netflix is working hard to create another high-quality season of this show.

There is currently no Shadow and Bone season 2 trailer. The first teaser trailer for season 1 arrived on February 26, roughly two months before the entire season dropped on Netflix.

That means we could be less than a year away from our next Shadow and Bone footage if everything remains on schedule. Either way, don’t expect too much until closer to the Shadow and Bone season 2 release date.

The Shadow and Bone season 2 cast will include Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Ben Barnes (General Kirigan), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik) and Calahan Skogman (Matthias Helvar), who are ready to reprise their roles.

We have no idea who the new additions could be at the moment, but once they’re announced, we’ll have a lot more to speculate about going forward.

Since Shadow and Bone explores the entirety of the Grishaverse, combining the Grisha trilogy and the Six of Crows duology, we don’t know exactly where the series will be heading next, though there’s a lot we could pull from the source material.

However, in order to remain as spoiler-free as possible, we’re going to avoid any major plot details from the books. Instead, let’s take a look at the Shadow and Bone season 1 finale to see where we left off.

All our heroes came together to defeat General Kirigan, but they didn’t stay for long. Mal and Alina are heading off on their own, hoping to better understand the Sun Summoner’s powers with the goal of making the Fold disappear once and for all. They still have plenty of personal issues to work out, but hopefully the universe will give them the time and space to do so.

Kaz, Inej, and Jesper have some unfinished business to attend to in the form of buying Inej’s freedom and winning back Kaz’s club. After that, Inej plans to offer her blades to Alina. Will Kaz and Jesper follow her along that path? For now, we have no idea, but I’d be shocked if Kaz didn’t find a way to keep Inej by his side.

Zoya is the one outlier here, and while she doesn’t love Alina by any stretch of the imagination, she betrayed General Kirigan in order to thwart his plans for total domination. She’s an interesting character who lives a bit in the gray, but I’m excited to see what’s in store for her.

Then we have General Kirigan. He emerged from the Fold with the volcra in tow, and while he might have been weakened, he is by no means defeated. The Darkling lives on, and I have a feeling he’s going to do all he can to ensure Alina doesn’t stop him a second time.

Baghra, Kirigan’s mother, is still kicking around. She was a tough teacher, but she also helped Alina escape right from under her son’s nose. Kirigan isn’t too happy with her, but how will he end up taking his revenge? Is she strong enough to hold her own against him? I’m not sure, and that worries me.

Lastly, we have Nina and Matthias. These two have had such a tumultuous relationship, but it’s been fun to watch so far. From Nina being kidnapped, to both of them saving each other’s lives, to that night where they had to share a bed or risk freezing to death (one of my favorite romance tropes, by the way). Now, Matthias is the one behind bars because it was the only way Nina could save him. Only, he thinks she’s betrayed him for real this time.

Now that the Sun Summoner is real and the world knows it, war and politics will likely play a heavy hand during Shadow and Bone season 2. Alina must find a way to save everyone from Kirigan’s dark magic without letting her powers fall into the wrong hands.

If nothing else, Shadow and Bone season 2 promises to be even more epic than the first.
