Whether you love the DCEU, DC comics, DCTV shows or are amped about the upcoming DC Universe experience, this year’s San Diego Comic Con has something for us all!
It’s my first year here at San Diego Comic Con and I honesty feel like I couldn’t have picked (or been picked, as it were) for a better year.
As a diehard DC fan, I feel like I’m walking into a buffet with a large variety of full meals to choose from. Here’s what’s on the menu:
DCTV
Every single Arrowverse show plus Black Lightning all have panels and press rooms here at San Diego Comic Con, so whatever your flavor of DC/CW, the con has got you covered. You’ll get to hear the cast and writers reflect on the past season, plus learn exciting new tidbits about the upcoming ones. Plus, there are sure to be a few clips and surprises thrown in there for good measure! I personally can’t wait to learn more about what’s next for the show I consider DC/CW’s best — Black Lightning.
I’m also hoping that the rather timely announcement that a Batwoman series is set to be produced by the Arrowverse team means that we’ll get some more news at one of these panels. Nothing so far as a casting decision, since I’m pretty sure I’ve heard they’re still on the lookout for a lesbian actress, but a few more crumbs would go a long way in getting us all hyped.
Syfy’s Superman prequel Krypton likewise has a panel this Saturday (guess the con just wanted all major live action DC panels on Saturday). Krypton just ended a fantastic first season and will soon be starting production on its second, and I’m excited to learn more about what’s in store for Seg-El after that first season finale!
DCEU
First off, the DC booth in the exhibit hall has the costumes from both Aquaman and Shazam, and it’s great to be able to see the level of detail and care up close.
But if you’re a DCEU fan like I am, the DC booth is a far off second to what we’re all really excited about: the Saturday Hall H panel.
We already know that we have a full-length trailer for Aquaman and at least a teaser trailer for Shazam on the way for us. Everything that we’ve seen and heard this week from both these movies — the posters, the promotional photos, and the set visit information — has me incredibly hyped for seeing actual footage. An appearance from Gal Gadot is all but officially confirmed, and I’m hoping that we get a few more looks at Cheetah and Diana wandering around in the 80’s landscape of America. Maybe even a few more hints at the storyline.
There are also rumors and rumblings of what we might see that hasn’t officially been announced. With the news drop this last Monday of the Birds of Prey lineup, might we be getting some more news (or maybe even an appearance) from Cathy Yan on this front? I’m crossing my fingers for it now! We also had big announcements this past year about Steven Spielberg’s Blackhawk and Ava DuVernay’s New Gods. San Diego Comic Con would definitely be a great place to announce anything related to these two big films.
Now, I fully understand that these rumors could be nothing more than very elaborate fanfiction, but it’s nice to hope, right? Wish me luck with that Hall H line!
DC Comics
If you’re a fan of DC comics, San Diego Comic Con is a dream for you. If you want to learn about how comic book storylines are translated from page to screen, what’s next for Batman after getting left at the altar, or what new adventures will be in store for the Justice League in the era of New Justice, then you’re in luck — there are panels just about that, from the writers and creative teams themselves!
Over in the DC booth, you’ll be able to watch your favorite artists — like Nicola Scott, Raphael Albuquerque and Joelle Jones — do a live sketch demonstration while answering questions from fans. You can also get your comic books signed by your favorite authors, like Tom King, Scott Snyder and Shawna and Julie Benson.
Finally, if you’re trying to find some beautiful DC art for your room, head on over to Artist’s Alley. You’ll find plenty of comic book artists with some amazing DC art for sale. I bought 11 pieces of art in about the span of an hour, including three from my personal favorites — Dustin Nguyen and Peter Nguyen.
Those 6th graders in my class for this upcoming year won’t have any doubt about which side of the DC/Marvel divide I fall under.
DC Universe
DC is treating San Diego Comic Con as its coming out party for DC Universe, its upcoming streaming service. Fans can head to the DC Universe Fan Activation experience offsite at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter. This interactive site gives you different immersive experiences to get you hyped for the upcoming new content, including a Swamp Thing walk through and a tour around Dick Grayson’s apartment where you solve a mystery.
I had the opportunity to preview the activation site on Wednesday, and I have to tell you that as a DC fan, it was a ton of fun. My personal favorite was the Swamp Thing experience!
DC Universe also released a new trailer for Titans this morning (which I absolutely loved) and Geoff Johns announced during his panel this afternoon that he will be creating a Stargirl series to debut on DC Universe in 2019.
DC Universe will also include the much anticipated third season of Young Justice, Young Justice: Outsiders. There will be a panel and press room for the show, both of which I’ll be attending, so check back later this weekend for all that we learned!
So have fun at SDCC this year, fellow DC fans! There’s a lot here for us. If you wanna chat about any and all things DC, come find me in the Hall H line. I’m pretty sure that’s how I’ll be spending most of my Friday afternoon and evening!
