Cloak and Dagger stopped by San Diego Comic-Con Friday night to discuss Ty and Tandy’s season 1 journey and give us a few hints about what season 2 might bring!
When I first watched Cloak and Dagger, I was so blown away by it that I described it as being completely fucking amazing — and I absolutely stand by that assessment. After one of the strongest pilots from a superhero show that I’ve ever seen, Cloak and Dagger has continued to deliver a story about trauma and healing that’s emotional, complex and utterly engaging to watch.
Last night’s episode finally gave us a look at Ty and Tandy as Cloak and Dagger, with both characters putting their respective powers on full display — Tandy to scare the shit out of Peter, Ty to force a confession out of Connors.
Moderated by Executive Vice President of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb, the panel was a super casual, somewhat meandering affair, as seems to be Jeph Loeb’s MO (he reminds me of a lovable yet always somewhat drunk uncle at the family barbecue).
After leading the audience in a Cloak and Dagger chant, he brought out the panelists — Olivia Holt as Tandy, Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone, Emma Lahana as Detective Brigid O’Reilly, Ally Maki as Mina Hess, and showrunner Joe Pokaski.
After watching a short video that served to both recap the last eight episodes and remind everyone how great this show is, the panelists themselves answered a few questions about their characters. Some interesting tidbits that we learned:
- Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph were cast three days before Cloak and Dagger was set to start filming. Their first chemistry read was the meeting scene in the graveyard, which was actually all ad-libbed by the two. Joe and Jeph described it as seeing “lightning in a bottle.”
- Olivia and Aubrey talked about moving the characters from New York (where they are in comics canon) to New Orleans. Aubrey described New Orleans as a city of hope and that it speaks a lot to who Ty and Tandy are.
- Joe said that he felt like Cloak and Dagger belonged in New Orleans all along — that it was a city that could use a couple of heroes who are a little damaged themselves. Plus, New York is pretty much overstuffed with superheroes!
- Olivia loves Tandy’s resilience, boldness, complicated nature and effortless sense of vulnerability. She also loves watching her relationship grow with Mina, because it’s rare to see on TV the amazing supportive female friendship like they have.
- Aubrey said that one thing he has in common with Tyrone is that everything that Ty does is operating out of love. Tyrone can really connect with anyone and he feels the same about himself.
After this section of the panel, there was a brief interlude where Jeph and Joe announced that — yay! — Cloak and Dagger was renewed for a second season. Since it’s Marvel’s best TV show, I expected nothing less, but still I’m super pumped about this news.
And while they wont go into production until the fall, they not only said that we’ll get season 2 sooner than we all think (double yay!), they likewise teased the upcoming villain in this season 2 promo video.
Then, we had a lightning round of questions from the audience.
While anyone paying attention to the show — especially Thursday’s episode — basically already knew this, we received confirmation that Cloak and Dagger is indeed within the MCUTV universe. We also learned (among things) that Aubrey’s favorite MCU character is Black Panther, while everyone else’s was Iron Man. If given the opportunity to bring anyone over into Cloak and Dagger, Olivia would want Jessica Jones, Emma would want Misty Knight, Ally would want Quake and Aubrey would want Luke Cage, who is saving his hometown of Brooklyn.
We also got a sneak peak of the final two episodes. As you can see from the video below, it looks to be an intense wrap up of the storyline, explaining what we saw in Ivan Hess’ terrible mind loop and giving us plenty of Cloak and Dagger using their superpowers to fight against terrors, Conners and even each other.
