Season 2 of Riverdale left off on a huge cliffhanger, but lucky for fans, the cast and showrunners of the hit series stopped by Comic-Con to tease what we can expect from season 3!
It was a big year for The CW’s Riverdale at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, where the series graduated from Ballroom 20 and took over the elusive Hall H on the last day of the convention.
The series left fans on the edge of their seats in the season 2 finale with Archie being hauled off to prison thanks to none other than Veronica’s daddy dearest, Hiram Lodge.
It looks like Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the rest of the gang have their work cut out for them in season 3 — especially given the first official trailer for the new season, which you can watch right now below!

In addition to unveiling the new trailer for season 3, executive producers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater, plus cast members KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Luke Perry, Mädchen Amick, Marisol Nichols, Madelaine Petsch, Ashleigh Murray, Mark Consuelos, Casey Cott, Skeet Ulrich, and Vanessa Morgan were all on hand at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 to tease what we can expect next season.
Here’s what we learned from Riverdale‘s Hall H panel at SDCC 2018!
1. Tension will still be running high between Hiram Lodge and the Serpents
There’s no denying the Serpents are trying to lie low — especially after losing the Southside to Hiram and the Ghoulies. So what’s next for the Serpents, who are now being led by Jughead, FP and Cheryl? According to Aguirre-Sacasa, they’ll kick things off by trying to keep a low profile.
“When we meet them in the premiere, they’re trying to maintain the peace between the Serpents, the Ghoulies, and Hiram,” teased the showrunner. “That quickly gets disturbed in the first episode back.”
2. The hot dads will be teaming up
There’s no denying that Archie is in quite the pickle, but Fred Andrews will be doing everything in his power to help clear Archie’s name. He won’t be going about the difficult task alone, however.
As Luke Perry revealed during the panel, he’ll be enlisting the help of Riverdale’s resident hot dads on the side of good.
“I’ve enlisted FP, I’ve enlisted Tom Keller to help,” teased Perry.
3. Toni and Josie might be going head to head.
Panel host Kelly Ripa (who also happens to be married to Hiram Lodge actor Mark Consuelos) accidentally let slip that this season might find Vanessa Morgan’s Toni in a bit of a rivalry with Ashleigh Murray’s Josie.
When she asked Morgan about what we can expect from the rivalry, Morgan was a bit confused until showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa interjected with, “They might not know about that yet.”
Ripa quickly tried to move things along but it’s interesting to hear that things might be heating up between Toni and Josie -— especially given that Cheryl was once quite fond of the Pussycats leading lady!
4. We’ll be seeing a new side to Riverdale’s resident rich girl, Veronica Lodge.
Last season on the series, things came to a head between Veronica and her kingpin father. Now that she’s officially been cut off from her inheritance, Camila Mendez says we’ll be seeing a new side of Ronnie -— one that’ll show she’s more than just a rich girl.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that she’s getting into the entrepreneurial business starting with running the new speakeasy located at Pop’s.
“We’ll be seeing a new side of her that we’ve never seen because she’s been cut off,” said Mendez, who also confirmed we’ll be seeing Veronica getting her hands dirty working the new speakeasy.
5. Betty will be dealing with the aftermath of her dad’s past in her own way.
Last season saw Betty (Lili Reinhart) grappling with the realization that her dad had actually been the man behind the mask all along.
According to Reinhart, the new season picks up three months after the events of the season 2 finale and in that time, Betty has “spent the summer interning and distracting herself.”
“She’s doing everything she can in her power not to think about her dad,” said Reinhart.
In addition, she’s dealing with her mother and her sister diving head-first into farm life.
“Betty wants to stay away far, far away from them,” said Reinhart, whose character is a bit dubious about the lifestyle the farm pushes.
6. The Jones family is about to grow by two.
Ever since the show premiered we’ve heard Jughead mention his mother and little sister. Now we’re learning that Gladys and little sis Jellybean will officially be coming to Riverdale in season 3.
“They are coming to Riverdale,” confirmed Sprouse.
Unfortunately, fans will have to wait just a bit longer to find out who will be playing Gladys and Jellybean.
“We cannot announce who they are,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “But [they will be introduced] around episode 8 or 9.”
7. There’ll be a few new faces joining the cast in season 3.
While Aguirre-Sacasa said that the plan for season 3 is to focus on the core group of characters, we will be seeing some new faces introduced as we move further and further into the new season.
“As we already discussed, we’re bringing some of the Jonses,” said the showrunner. “We’re also talking to some really exciting gentlemen to play Edgar Evernever, who is the lead of the farm.”
Riverdale returns to The CW for season 3 Wednesday, October 10th, at 8 p.m.
