We spoke to Saoirse Ronan about her not-so-secret dreams of doing a musical, her Hamilton love, and why Brooklyn is such a personal movie for her.
On the BFI LFF red carpet for Brooklyn in London, lead actress Saoirse Ronan took a question from Empire‘s Alastair Livesley, talking about the challenge of playing a character so similar to herself:
“I didn’t realize how much of a challenge it was gonna be at the time… I read the script before I had moved away and I think in that time to then go back to the film a year later, it meant so much more to me and I related to it on a much deeper level,” Ronan says.
“I think that’s why audiences respond to it too, because they know what it’s like, they know that feeling. So everyone, for the most part, is really invested in it.”
Ronan had previously discussed how she’d love to do a musical, naming Grease and Mary Poppins as potential remakes she could be a part of. We asked which musical she’d most like to do:
“I don’t know if it’d necessarily have to be like Funny Girl or something, but I’d quite like to do an original musical,” says Ronan. “I just really like the idea of doing a dance routine!”
Ronan also reveals herself to be a Hamilton fan, although it is pointed out to her that she’s “probably too white” for a role in that.
(Please note: This question was inspired a Q&A question asked by Mark Everclear.)
Saoirse Ronan is heading to the stage next year, for a revival of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
Brooklyn was directed by John Crowley, with a script by Nick Hornby. It also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters and Emory Cohen. Read our full, spoiler-free review of Brooklyn here!
