Ryan Murphy adds American Crime Story to his catalog of projects as FX green-lights a straight to series order.
Do not expect any supernatural elements, clowns, or witches, unless lawyers bring them into the investigation in Ryan Murphy’s latest anthology for FX. Aptly named, American Crime Story, the series is billed as a “companion” to American Horror Story and will focus on one crime per 10 episode installment.
American Crime Story: The People Vs. O.J. Simpson is the first case on the docket for Murphy and team. Murphy states, “The O.J. case was as tragic as it was fascinating – it seemed like everyone had a stake in the outcome. It was really the beginning of the modern tabloid age.”

The series will be directed by Ryan Murphy with a script from Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski who based the series on The Run of His Life: The People V. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin. Ryan Murphy will team up with familiar partners Brad Falchuck and Dante Di Lorento in addition to Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
Filming is slated to begin in early next year in Los Angeles. The series is not going to be a rehash of the televised trial. Instead, following Toobin’s work, the story will focus on the lawyers work behind the scenes to get the jury to find a reasonable doubt.
John Landgraf the CEO, FX Networks and FX Productions, had this to say of Ryan Murphy in his announcement of the series:
I have no doubt that Ryan and his partners, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, and Dante Di Loreto are going to make something very memorable here – and that it will be a spectacular first entry in what is destined to become a series of great true crime-based miniseries.

The mini-series category works for Ryan Murphy’s visions to focus on specific events in a confined amount of time. Where the imagination can tend to get the best of him on Glee and even at times on American Horror Story, real crimes with documented evidence provide a confined box to work within for the series.
American Horror Story: Freak Show, Murphy’s fourth installment in that series, premieres tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m. ET on FX. Murphy also announced this week that he and partner David Miller welcomed their second son by surrogate. What a week for the Murphy household!
