The ladies were front and center in Roswell, New Mexico season 2, episode 3.
“Good Mother” could not have been a more fitting title for this episode of Roswell, New Mexico, which was all about the mamas. The episode dove into some tough stuff for the show’s women, as well as taking us back to the 1947 crash that brought the aliens to Earth.
It was so cool to get a glimpse at what happened when the aliens touched down and get a different perspective. While Michael’s mother truly came in peace, not all of the aliens were as friendly, complicating the initial narrative of aliens=innocent, humans=xenophobic. It looks like there’s still a lot of grey area to explore.
I’m so intrigued to see more of what Michael’s mother did in her year of freedom, and not just because it means more of The Vampire Diaries actress Kayla Ewell on the show and more of Michael and Alex working together.
I’m also desperate to know who the woman is who saved Nora. Could it be Max and Isobel’s mom? Could it be Michael’s other mom? Who’s to say reproduction even works the same way on their planet!
It’s really nice to see Guerin and Alex work together in their “platonic acquaintances” way. Even though there will always be more between them, it’s good to finally see them interact without so much tension and drama.
They need time to reconnect on a different level if things are ever going to work between them, and if it means we’re going to get to see even more scenes with them together, we’ll take it.
We also got to see Michael be legitimately happy with Maria for a solid few minutes, which we’ll also take! Even though it was short-lived, it was really cool to see Guerin as the doting boyfriend for a second.
The love triangle between him, Maria, and Alex is shaping up to be a great one, but I’d also really love to see him settled for a while.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’ll be happening right now, because the alien is officially out of the bag for Maria!
I was honestly very surprised that Roswell, New Mexico let Maria in on the secret this early. I was expecting to see Guerin agonize over wanting to tell her for weeks before this finally blew up in his face. I definitely didn’t expect Maria to simply stumble into Rosa in the back room of the Wild Pony.

That being said, I’m glad Maria’s now in the loop because it means she can become a bigger part of everyone’s storylines. Being the only person who didn’t know meant she was often left on the outside.
She’s understandably hurt right now, but if/when she finds a way to forgive everyone, they’ll all be closer for it. Now she can fully be brought in and, if they can salvage it, have a more honest and open relationship with Guerin.
It was heartbreaking to see Rosa break down over her mistake. It’s clear that she considers herself to be a screw up who can’t do anything right. It’s so sad that she’s just always living in fear of ruining anything good in her life.
For Liz to love her through that was so poignant and powerful, and will hopefully be a turning point for Rosa. Liz is realizing that her sister doesn’t need scolding and supervision, she needs help. I’m really excited to see where Rosa’s story goes now that Liz is addressing that.
Admittedly, I was a little weary in the last episode of Roswell, New Mexico when they jumped into the abortion storyline with Isobel’s half-baked plan to micro-dose a lethal substance.
However, after this episode, I get it, and I love it. This isn’t just the story of a woman choosing to have an abortion. It’s the story of the thousands of women who are hurting or killing themselves because they don’t have access to a safe abortion.
Isobel’s plan was not good, but it was the only way out she thought she had. Like so many women, she was not able to seek medical assistance. She also felt incredibly isolated, feeling like she had nobody to turn to for advice. Her desperation to release herself from every part of Noah caused her to take drastic measures.
For Isobel, choosing not to have a baby turned out to be an incredibly empowering experience in which she finally took agency over her own body and her own life. Unfortunately, it’s also a choice that some women struggle with greatly.
For others, it’s a complicated combination of the two. Regardless of what choice a woman makes, all of these women need to have access to medical resources to help them through their decision while maintaining their physical and mental health.
There were so many things I loved about Isobel’s scenes in Roswell, New Mexico season 2, episode 3. For starters, it was amazing to see her interact with Max again, even if he was just the voice inside her head.
He represented her fear, but not her uncertainty. She was steadfast in her choice, but terrified of both the alternative and how she had to go about it.
It was so beautiful that the real Max could sense Isobel’s pain, even from the grave. The connection these two share has depths that we haven’t even come close to exploring yet.
I’m so glad Max, along with Rosa and Liz, were there to help Isobel, and I’m really excited for what the Lizobel bonding scene could mean for their friendship in the future.
One of my favorite things about this episode of Roswell, New Mexico was how focused it was on the show’s women. Between all the mothers, Lizobel, Maria, and Liz/Cameron, it was such a beautiful tapestry of awesome, dynamic, strong, intelligent women who are more than capable of making their own choices.
I also really liked that they emphasized the fact that Isobel actually wanted to be a mother. Just because a women wants the opportunity to have a baby one day, doesn’t mean they should have to take an opportunity that’s wrong for them.
Lastly, it was simply amazing when Isobel showed her trunk of sex toys to Sheriff Valenti, because even in her darkest days, Isobel can still slay an opponent like nobody else.
The question now is, was that enough to get Sheriff Valenti off the case? Unfortunately, we’re thinking not. We’ll have to wait for the next episode of Roswell, New Mexico to see if they can keep thwarting her suspicions, or if they’ll have to answer for what they’ve done.
