Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is taking his talents to HBO Max.
According to Deadline, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — best known for spearheading Archie Comics adaptations Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Katy Keene — has two new projects coming down the pipeline over at HBO Max.
First up, the forthcoming streaming service has ordered a pilot as well as an additional script for a series called The Shelley Society.
Aguirre-Sacasa, who will serve as showrunner on The Shelley Society, teamed up with Riverdale scribes Tessa Leigh Williams and James DeWille to write the show.
Billed as Gothic horror meets teen romance and described as “a Victorian X-Files,” The Shelley Society focuses on a young Mary Shelley as she faces off against a slew of supernatural threats — including the very monster she created in Frankenstein.
Mary won’t be facing down those supernatural threats alone — she’ll be doing it with the help of a band of Romantic outlaws, which includes the likes of her former lovers Percy and Lord Byron.
The Shelley Society isn’t the only project Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has coming down the pipeline at HBO Max.
In addition, it’s being reported that the Riverdale creator is teaming up with Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions to work on The Brides.
Interestingly, The Brides had originally been put into development at NBC for the 2015-2016 television season. The series went as far as to get a pilot production commitment, but never made it to air.
A contemporary reimagining of Dracula, The Brides is a vampire family drama that centers on three empowered, diverse, immortal female leads. The story follows their attempts to maintain wealth, prestige, and legacy in their family.
There’s currently no word on when we can expect either of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s forthcoming projects to make their debuts on HBO Max, but we’ll be looking forward to following developments in production news for both projects!
For now, fans of the showrunner can catch Riverdale and Katy Keene (coming soon!) on The CW, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix.
