Riverdale will lose two of its original stars after its fourth season.
TVLine is reporting that Skeet Ulrich, who plays F.P. Jones, and Marisol Nichols, who plays Hermione Lodge, will not be returning to Riverdale in season 5.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the friendships I’ve made on Riverdale, and I will miss seeing everyone on a daily basis,” Ulrich said of his departure. “I’m proud to have been part of such a talented group of people, in front of the camera and behind. But I’ve decided that it’s time for me to move on to explore other creative opportunities.”
As for those other creative opportunities, Ulrich is currently set to appear in BIOS with Tom Hanks and Samira Wiley and #Freerayshawn, one of the bite-sized movies premiering on Quibi.
Nichols added, “I had an incredible time bringing Hermione Lodge to life and working with my amazing cast, who became family. We had so many wonderful times together during the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We really do have the best fans ever. I am looking forward to the next chapter and am excited about the future.”
Nichols is currently set to star in the Saw sequel, Spiral. with Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock.
These departures could mean a few things for Riverdale. We’re particularly worried about Ulrich’s departure, as F.P.’s absence could come as a result of Jughead’s death. If Jughead were to die, F.P. would have less of a reason to be around. He’s still the town sheriff, but it’s been proven that that position is far from secure.

Of course, unless Madchen Amick is gearing up to announce her departure, F.P. will always have Alice Cooper to stick around for. That is, if he’s alive. Obviously, Ulrich leaving could mean that F.P. himself will die in Riverdale season 4. The same could be said for Hermione Lodge, since Marisol Nichols is also leaving. Either of these deaths would be particularly cruel so soon after the loss of Fred Andrews.
Another possibility is that the departure of the parents means that we’ll be spending less time in the town of Riverdale in season 5. At least some of the characters will be heading off to college, so the show might (and hopefully will) follow them there. One thing’s for sure, with these announcements, there’s going to be some huge changes coming to Riverdale in season 5!
