Riverdale season 4, episode 10, solidified a new rivalry for the students of Riverdale High.
“Chapter Sixty-Seven: Varsity Blues” certainly lived up to its name, putting both the Bulldogs and the Vixens in high stakes scenarios. While Riverdale High and Stonewall Prep were getting ready for the big game, both the players and the cheerleaders were playing their own games off the field.
I’m so happy we’re finally getting some real rivalry between the two high schools! I thought we’d get so much more of this in Riverdale season 4 with Jughead at Stonewall, but there’s been nothing but rude quips from Bret up to this point.

Seeing the weird Stonewall kids out of their natural habitat actually helped expose some of their more evil tendencies. It was interesting that they chose to juxtapose Bret’s wild “gladiator” side and his wounded boy side in one episode. We got to see exactly how willing he was to take someone out to get what he wants at the same time that we learned his deepest darkest secret.
I wanted to feel bad for him, but he’s been such a wildcard up to this point that all I felt was fear for Jughead and the Bulldogs. I just don’t trust this guy around anyone. Especially not after what he and his friends did to Monroe.
I was absolutely devastated for Monroe in Riverdale season 4, episode 10. I was so happy to hear him talking about the scout from Notre Dame, considering what his future could be like. This kid has had it harder than any of the other Riverdale characters and he still has a huge heart. I really, desperately hope that no weird drug scandal hurts his chances of going to the school.
Speaking of that, I’m actually in awe of how quickly Frank Andrews disappointed us. I was really thinking he would be a positive role model and a father figure for Archie, but that couldn’t be further from the case. He wasn’t even here for one episode before he started giving kids drugs. Of course, Archie forgave him almost instantly. At least we can count on Mary Andrews to give him a piece of her mind though!
Even though Stonewall won the game, Betty isn’t even close to being finished fighting. She saw a side of Bret that she’ll never forget, and she’s taking this battle from the ball to the buzzer. Whatever happens, I’m guessing Betty and Bret won’t be besties at Yale next year, whether Jughead is actually there or not. Yeah, I’m still not willing to believe that he’s really dead.
This was an interesting episode for Bughead. Some cracks were exposed in their relationship with Jughead keeping some pretty huge secrets from her. However, in the end, he was willing to give everything up for her. While I don’t necessarily recommend that course of action to high school students in relationships, it was pretty cute seeing Jughead make that choice.
I have to say, I was surprised to see Cheryl so caught up in the Vixens drama in Riverdale season 4, episode 10, since she has her mother locked in an underground bunker, but we can always count on Cheryl to prioritize exactly the wrong thing. She definitely won this round against Mr. Honey, but things could get a lot worse for her if/when the coach gets out of her office.
Luckily, if all else fails for Cheryl, she now has a potentially lucrative business in the making. Since Veronica wholly misunderstood patent law yet again, she found herself selling illegal rum. You know, illegal in a way that’s not just because she’s a teenager selling alcohol.
Just when I was breathing a sigh of relief at a Hiram-free episode of Riverdale, he pulled the most Hiram move ever and served his own daughter in her place of business. Ugh. It’s nice that Veronica and Reggie are friends again and keying cars together, but this petty revenge isn’t enough. Hiram’s only going to come for Veronica harder now, and she should know better.
Other than that, it was really good to have Veronica back in the main storyline. She’s been very separate for most of Riverdale season 4, so I was living for the B&V scheme scene! I will never not love seeing those two work together, but I’m also really excited to see what’s in store for Veronica and Cheryl.
That’s almost it for this week. However, since it’s Riverdale’s senior year, each week I will be giving out some yearbook superlatives for the episode. Check them out here!

Cutest couple: B&V! It was so great to see these girls working together again.
Best dressed: Mr. Honey. Kerr Smith looked pretty darn cute in that Bulldogs sweater.
Most likely to not understand that teenagers aren’t allowed to sell rum: Apparently the entire town of Riverdale.
Most likely to join the NFL: Monroe. Pretty please? That kid deserves the world.
Most likely to set a record for disappointing people the fastest: Frank Andrews, by a landslide.
