It looks like we might have to wait even longer for Barry Allen to race into theaters with a standalone movie for The Flash.
Ezra Miller has played Barry Allen, aka The Flash, for a few movies in the DCEU, but he has yet to get his own, standalone story. And while this movie has been a long time coming, it seems that its release is going to be pushed back even farther, reportedly hitting theaters in 2021.
Variety first reported the delay, and it seems that while the movie had struggled with creative differences between the studio, writers, and director in the past, this time the Wizarding World is partly to blame. Due to Miller’s commitments with the Fantastic Beasts franchise, which is set to start shooting in July, filming for The Flash has been pushed back to late 2019 at the earliest.
Of course, as Variety reports, Warner Bros. has been reevaluating its approach to the DCEU since the box office disappointment Justice League. A standalone Flash movie hadn’t actually been officially greenlit, nor did it have an official release date. However, despite the lack of an official greenlight, it’s been all but confirmed to be happening, and a script is being worked on intensely.
In fact, it is that very script work that first introduced the scheduling conflict for Ezra Miller. Production was initially expected to begin in March for The Flash standalone film, but last-minute tweaks on the script made it clear that writers needed a bit more time, pushing production back initially to the summer, introducing the Fantastic Beasts conflict for Miller.
However, it seems that the movie is still set to happen, albeit a bit later than some initial reports, and we’re happy they’re taking the time to get the script just right. So even though we might have to wait a bit longer to hang out with Barry Allen in his own standalone film, we’re just grateful one is happening. We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks about The Flash movie.
