The second book in Lisa T. Bergren’s Remnants series, titled Season of Fire, is now available! Check out our review here.
Season of Wonder, the first novel in this series, introduced us to Andriana, a Remnant with the powers of an Empath. The initial book dropped us into her world and showed us the stakes, but Season of Fire pushes those stakes even higher as Dri and her friends continue on their divine mission.
After Dri and Ronan admitted their feelings for each other near the end of the previous book, we see the consequences of that revelation rather quickly in the next novel. After all, Remnants and Knights are not supposed to fall in love with each other. It could jeopardize the Mission, and with the entire world at stake, that is one thing they cannot sacrifice. The Mission comes first. Always.
However, Andriana is facing a much larger obstacle. She’s been kidnapped by Sethos and Keallach. Dri believes the latter can be brought back over to the light side, but at the same time, she struggles with her own darkness. Sethos has planted a seed in her, and it’s getting harder and harder to fight that feeling of bitterness, jealousy, and anger.
‘Season of Fire’ book review
Just as in the first book, Season of Fire continues to add depth to the highly detailed world Bergren has created. Though sometimes it feels as though this story takes place in another time and place altogether, there are moments that remind you this world is not so far away from our own.
One of the major highlights of this second installation is an expansion of that universe. Andriana and her friends travel to new villages and cities, and we meet more of the people she will be fighting with and for. These exotic peoples add a layer of reality and mystery to the already intricately written novel.
Andriana continues to be the heroine we fell in love with in the first book. Her ability to take care of herself has not waned, and yet we see a much more vulnerable person as she opens herself up to Ronan and takes a chance with him. It is in those moments of simultaneous strength and weakness that we can relate to Dri the most and are drawn into her world as she fights for those she cares about and even those she doesn’t yet know.
