Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon are officially heading to Hulu!
According to Variety, Hulu has given a straight to series order to Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington’s upcoming limited series Little Fires Everywhere.
The new show, which has received an eight episode order, is based off of author Celeste Ng’s best-selling book of the same name which was released in 2017.
Both the book and the upcoming adaptation center around a single mother and daughter who move to a small suburban Ohio town. The story also details what transpires in the suburban town after a custody battle over a Chinese-American baby blows up.
Both Witherspoon and Washington are set to star in Little Fires Everywhere; the actresses will also serve as executive producers on the series, with Liz Tigelaar penning the script and serving as showrunner.
In a statement announcing the project, Witherspoon detailed why she feels as though Hulu was the right network for the upcoming adaptation.
“At Hello Sunshine, we strive to shine a light on female-driven stories that are rooted in inspiration, emotion and truth— all of which form the bedrock of Celeste Ng’s ingenious work,” said Witherspoon. “Hulu has a rich history of transforming groundbreaking literature into groundbreaking television, and we are confident the their talented team will use this story to spur a long-overdue dialogue around peace, class, and what it means to be a mother.”
Washington also released a statement which echoed Witherspoon’s excitement to work with Hulu to bring Ng’s incredible novel to life.
“As producers, we at Simpson Street are so proud to be part of this team to tell this extraordinary story inspired by Celeste Ng’s phenomenal novel and we are thrilled to be embarking on this journey with Hulu,” said Washington. “As an actress, I am floored to have the opportunity to work alongside Reese Witherspoon exploring the which themes of this story playing these dynamic characters.”
There’s currently no word on when Hulu plans to release Little Fires Everywhere.
