Update: Tom Hooper’s big screen adaptation of Cats the musical has added another powerhouse pop star to its incredibly impressive ensemble cast.
According to Billboard, multiplatinum singer-songwriter Jason Derulo has joined the cast of director Tom Hooper’s upcoming big screen adaptation of Cats the musical.
Derulo will be taking on the coveted role of Rum Tum Tugger— a cat who is described as “rebellious and never satisfied.”
The role opposite heavyweights like Idris Elba, Judi Dench, and Ian McKellen marks Derulo’s feature acting debut.
Derulo isn’t the only star to recently join the cast of Cats. Just yesterday, we learned that Rebel Wilson had also joined the start-studded ensemble cast.
Get details on the role she’ll be playing below!
Original Story:
Rebel Wilson is the latest notable star to join the cast of Universal’s upcoming big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Cats.
According to Deadline, Pitch Perfect vet Rebel Wilson will be sharing the silver screen with Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, and many more in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Cats the musical.
Wilson will be playing the role of The Old Gumbie Cat, Jennyanydots.
Her family thinks she’s lazy because she spends her days sitting around in warm and sunny spots. What they don’t know is that she comes alive at night after they go to sleep. It’s then that she keeps the mice busy by teaching them music, crocheting and tatting. She also teaches the cockroaches how to tap-dance.
Wilson is the latest actress to join a star-studded ensemble cast that Universal has slowly been revealing over the course of the past few months.
Others set to star in Hooper’s upcoming adaptation include Ian McKellen (Gus the Theatre Cat), Judi Dench (Deuteronomy), Idris Elba (Macavity), Jennifer Hudson (Grisabella), Taylor Swift, and James Corden.
Corden and Swift’s parts have not been announced yet, but given that the cast has already started rehearsals out at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, we’re sure it’s only a matter of time before we’re clued in to who they will be playing.
Others who’ve been tapped for the elaborate ensemble cast include Royal Ballet principal dancers Steven McRae and Francesca Hayward. They’ll be playing Skimbleshanks and Victoria, respectively.
The upcoming adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic Broadway musical is set to hit theaters just in time for next year’s holiday season on December 20, 2019.
As for Rebel Wilson, fans will soon be able to see the actress starring opposite Priyanka Chopra, Adam Devine, and Liam Hemsworth in the upcoming rom-com, Isn’t it Romantic. The film, which recently released its first feature length trailer, is due out on Valentine’s Day 2019.
