Love them or hate them, Hallmark Christmas movies are a staple during the holiday season. While they are all slightly different, the archetype characters stay the same. Which one are you?
Hallmark Christmas movies are my guiltiest of guilty pleasures. My personal favorite elements include relays of any kind, a fake-relationship that turns real, royalty in fake nations that all are somewhere in France, but they speak with British accents, and the incorporation of any Jane Austen novel for no other reason than to use the name Darcy to fit a grumpy, sullen leading man.'
And while Hallmark still maintains a hold on the market with 37 new holiday movies in 2018 alone, Netflix and Lifetime are stepping up their seasonal game. Netflix’s The Christmas Prince was a front-runner for my favorite holiday movie of 2017 and the sequel and The Princess Switch are giving the 2018 Hallmark catalogue a run for their money.
Lifetime brought together the One Tree Hill gang for a reunion with The Christmas Contract. But Chad Michael Murray lent his talents to the alpha-Christmas network appearing as one of the three Wise brothers in Hallmark’s The Road to Christmas.
Wherever you are finding your Christmas movie fix, there are a few staples in each. Besides plenty of fake snow, the sets are filled with townsfolk who love the season more than anything. There are volunteers, coffee baristas, bookstore owners, and that one special person who runs the show and has an endless supply of good feeling to pass around.
To counter that excess spirit there is also always someone in need of holiday joy. Whether they are getting over a traumatic holiday memory, finally coming home after leaving for the “big city,” or simply working too hard to celebrate, the holiday champion is right around the corner to help them find their spirit.'
