This Christmas season, Hulu is making all your wishes come true with its delightfully adorable special Puppies Crash Christmas.
‘Tis the season of Hallmark movies (which we love, by the way) and Yule logs, It’s a Wonderful Life and Elf. Netflix has also jumped into the holiday fray with fare like A Christmas Prince.
But Hulu has topped them all with its 33-minute special Puppies Crash Christmas.
Puppies Crash Christmas is exactly what the title sounds like: a gaggle of adorable puppies escape from Santa’s bag in a beautifully-decorated home and, well, crash Christmas. Nothing is spared from curious and destructive puppers; the presents, Santa’s cookies, the tree and the roasted turkey are just a few items to meet their demise at the paws of these adorable pups.
And though all the puppies are precious in their own rights, the Hulu team has settled on a favorite: “There’s this basset hound, which wreaks havoc and then passes out for about 20 minutes,” Schneider says. “It’s the most fantastic character ever. We put the basset hound photo in many areas of the office.”
Hilariously, the credits also pay tribute to everything destroyed; after noting that no puppies were harmed during the filming (and a PETA representative was on set during filming to assure the puppies’ well-being), it lists everything the puppies wrecked.
Puppies Crash Christmas joins Hulu’s other holiday streaming specials like Gingerbread Home Remodel (people eat a gingerbread house), A Sap Story (sap is drained from a tree), and Stuck Santa (Santa is stuck in a chimney).
Hulu’s director of brand marketing Michael Schneider tells IndieWire that last year, “Gingerbread Home Remodel…saw well over three million views during that time period. It was the first year that we did something special around the holiday time, and we’re really pleased with the way it performed.”
When ideas were floated for what to do in 2017, Schneider says, “Given the success that we saw last year, we really wanted to do something a bit different but keep the same spirit of it this year. Puppies are something we certainly think and hope that everyone will find incredibly cute and put on while they’re at the table or while friends and family are over. That’s something only Hulu can provide.”
If you need any more convincing (let’s be honest, why would you?), then watch the trailer for Puppies Crash Christmas:
Puppies Crash Christmas gets a 14/10, would set loose again and again.
As for what could be coming next year, Schneider says, “We already have thought about doing something similar for next year, and cats are certainly in the conversation.
“We stuck with puppies just because frankly there are more puppy owners on the team than we thought. So internally, we thought wreaking havoc around your traditional holiday setting, that puppies can do it more dramatically, but cats are certainly on the table for next year.”
