Prometheus 2 is now titled Alien: Paradise Lost, but it’s neither an Alien movie nor a John Milton adaptation. Yeah, we don’t get it either.
Ridley Scott is working on the sequel to Prometheus, sending Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) to the Engineers’ home planet and, hopefully, discovering the origins of humanity.
Just like Prometheus, the sequel’s relation to the original Alien movies is somewhat unclear, although Scott has attempted to clear up the mystery.
Speaking to Coming Soon, Scott revealed that the Prometheus and Alien mythologies will finally mash up in the third or fourth movie (yeah, he’s planning to do a lot of these). “The whole point of it is to explain the Alien franchise and to explain the how and why of the creation of the Alien itself,” Scott said.
So, naturally, we were kind of thrown off when Scott, while promoting The Martian, told Hey U Guys that Prometheus 2 is now titled Alien: Paradise Lost.
It’s a Prometheus sequel, which does not yet tie into the Alien franchise, and yet it’s called Alien? Huh?
Then there’s the Paradise Lost subtitle, which is a direct swipe from John Milton’s epic poem of the same name.
The Prometheus story’s connection to Paradise Lost is obvious, of course, as Milton’s poem is all about the Biblical fall of man, telling the story of how Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. Perhaps we might even say it’s a little too on the nose?
Prometheus 2… er, Alien: Paradise Lost, is Ridley Scott’s next project, and we’ll keep you updated as we learn more. Until then, at least there’s The Martian to look forward to!
