We got to attend the special Power Rangers panel today at New York Comic-Con, and though not a lot of new information was revealed, there were some tidbits that fans will be excited to learn.
The Theater at Madison Square Garden was packed to the brim with fans buzzing for the excitement of Lionsgate’s big panel which featured one half Power Rangers and the other half John Wick 2 starring Keanu Reeves. We even had the privilege of sharing an elevator with Mr. Keanu Reeves himself earlier before the panel, and can confirm he is quite a stud!
But we’re here to talk Power Rangers!
The panel consisted of Power Rangers Director Dean Israelite and each of the five actors playing the Rangers. It was clear from the beginning that these five actors had become an ensemble both on the screen and off. They had fun completing each others’ sentences, and revealed they used WhatsApp group messaging to get to know each other before they all started filming together.
After some on-set anecdotes, including one from Naomi Scott mentioning that she punched someone in the face accidentally on one of the first days of filming, they got around to showing the Power Rangers teaser trailer. As expected, the entire theater went crazy by the end of of the teaser. Fans started cheering particularly loudly when Elizabeth Banks’ character Rita Repulsa appeared on screen.

Rita’s henchman Goldar is in Power Rangers
Director Dean Israelite was quick to mention that fans should remember that this is just a teaser and that there will be plenty more to reveal. Specifically, Israelite mentioned that we will see zords, Rita, Zordon, Alpha 5 and notably, Goldar, one of Rita Repulsa’s henchmen.
The cast talked a bit about their zords saying that each one of the Rangers had a different experience filming. Becky G, who plays Trini, called out that her sabretooth tiger zord did a lot of pouncing which caused a lot of struggling during filming. She was also quick to call out Naomi Scott’s character, Pink Ranger Kimberly, who didn’t have to do much with her zord. The pterodactyl, as Becky G points out, just had to fly.
Zords make an ‘appearance’ says Power Rangers Director Israelite
Additionally, Israelite made mention that the zords make an “appearance” in this movie, which hinted that though the zords will be exciting to see, they may not have prominent placement in the film. Israelite went on to mention that Ludi Lin, the Black Ranger, has the final shot in the movie and we will see him with his zord in that scene.
At the end of the panel fans were treated to an encore showing of the newly released Power Rangers trailer. Just before the trailer ran, all five of the Ranger actors stood up, held each other around the shoulders and watched it together. The entire theater exclaimed an adorable “awwww” as they watched the actors hug.
It’s pretty clear that Power Rangers is turning out to be a must-see superhero movie. It’s worth nothing that the floor of New York Comic-Con was filled to the brim with more Power Rangers cosplay and merchandise than in years past.
