Hype Special #16 – ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Script Book Breakdown

Hosted by Pamela Gocobachi, Tariq Kyle, Andrea Salazar, Eric Scull

August 3, 2016

Those lucky few who saw Harry Potter and the Cursed Child during previews in London may have recorded two specials back in June, but we just couldn’t resist recording another now that most Potter fans have had the chance to digest the story in script book form!

Hype Podcast hosts Pamela and Kyle are joined by special guests Andrea Salazar and Eric Scull to take a deep dive into the eighth Harry Potter story. It’s safe to say Cursed Child gave us all a heavy dose of nostalgia— and even made us shed a tear at certain points— but even so, we still have a few bones to pick with the play. Remember guys: we gripe because we care!

SHOWNOTES
– Note: The original version of this file had some issues. They’ve since been fixed. We apologize!
– We discuss some of our favorite characters and whether or not they fell flat for us in the books
Cursed Child Ron is #NotOurRonWeasley— the hosts discuss his lack of characterization in the play
– Andrea addresses the elephant in the room: “It’s like someone said ‘Hey! Look at my fanfic!’”
– Eric ponders over whether so many Potter fans were disappointed because their expectations were too high for the play
– Would the time-turner story arc have made more sense or been more compelling if the story had seen Albus and Scorpius going back to save someone closer to Harry like Sirius or Remus?
– Was it absolutely necessary to go back to the beginning of the Triwizard tournament or could they have traveled to another place in time in order for Delphi’s master plan to get put into action?
– The time turner sequences are described in a very interesting way in the script book, but how do they transpire on stage? Kyle explains how they pulled them off and says “it was really one of the coolest things!”
Could reading the script alter how you see the play? We discuss.
– We dive deep into some of the new Potter generation!
– Did we expect Rose to come off as so cutthroat? Does she come off that way in the play?
– We gush over Scorpius because honestly, how can you NOT? – – We take a deeper look as to why the youngest Malfoy has quickly become a fan favorite.
– Harry doesn’t come off as the best father in the play— was portraying him like this a disservice to his character?
Confession time: Cursed Child totally made us cry more than once!
– We discuss J.K. Rowling’s comments that we should consider Cursed Child cannon
– Don’t worry, Draco fans— we didn’t forget about your favorite Malfoy! We take a look at where he is 19 years later and discuss his relationship with Harry.
– Albus and Scorpius: do we ship it?
– Was the Harry and Albus conflict too forced?
– Now that we’ve all experienced Cursed Child in some form, do we agree that a play was the right format in which to tell this story?
– In our listener feedback, Kyle describes some of the more fantastical moments in the play. We also address one listener’s concern that the story felt too rushed.
