Episode #134: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Hosted by Brittany, Karen, and Kristen

April 11, 2017

Book Hype hosts Karen, Kristen, and Brittany are back and ready to discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of the book world! (And some more adaptation/book news, too!)

You can find Book Hype on Twitter at @BookHype.

What we’re reading:
The Wanderers by Meg Howrey
Roar by Cora Carmack

Book Bites:

In honor of National Siblings Day on April 10, we have a chat about our favorite siblings in literature! Let us know which sibling pairs or groups we may have missed!

-Karen steals everyone’s ultimate favorites.
-Kristen goes on and on (and on) about the Ferris brothers and the Archer brothers. So much great family drama in the romance genre.
-Brittany reminds us just how much she loves the Holmes sibling-dynamic and promises a great discussion of the Jane and Elizabeth Bennett relationship when we finally get to the Jane Austen episode very, very soon!

The Good
-We start off with some recommendations of books we love that we don’t talk about very often.
-Karen kicks it off with Firebringer by David Clement-Davies.
-It is told from the point-of-view of a deer. #funfacts
-Kristen, as usual, can’t choose just one book to talk about. Such a cheater.
-She has an older Lauren Layne book and a Harry Potter-like women’s fiction series to talk about.
-Brittany regales us with her love for White Noise by Don DeLillo.
-She credits her love for The Leftovers show with her appreciation of White Noise.

The Bad
-Next we discuss the worst adaptations we’ve ever seen.
-Kristen has a lot of feelings about Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, especially regarding Ginny and that final sequence.
-Karen chose The Cat in the Hat, but had a lot of trouble because, as regular Book Hype listeners know, she has a lot of affection for terrible movies.
-Brittany just can’t with Golden Compass. It was compacted into a single film, and may have benefited from a split (which is a very uncommon occurrence, Hollywood. Don’t get ahead of yourselves, here).

And the Ugly
-It’s kind of fun to read terrible one-star reviews for your favorite books, just to see how ridiculous people can be.
-Karen didn’t find it as enjoyable, but she did look for some bad reviews for House of Hades by Rick Riordan. She hoped for people to be ridiculous, but instead she found a lot of homophobia.
-Kristen has a lot of love for the doughnut-hater that reviewed Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie.
-Brittany’s review of The Secret History by Donna Tartt is one of the best written negative reviews any of us have ever read. Good on you, negative reviewer, for being capable of expressing your hatred for this book so very eloquently.

Book News
Cara Delevingne is writing a book!
YA has taken on Star Wars and we are so here for it.
-We go on a bit of a Harry Potter tangent, which has Brittany recommending Background Slytherin, and now we can’t stop giggling.
George Takei is writing an autobiography graphic novel about his time in a Japanese-American internment camp in addition to his experiences later in life.
Geek Girl Rising‘s adaptation sounds amazing, and we can’t wait to see what a Kelly Ripa-developed series looks like.
Labyrinth Lost, a story close to fellow Hypable staffer Danielle’s heart, is being adapted!

What’s Next?
-A movie tie-in discussion with guest host Caitlin is coming next week.
-April 29 is our Jane Austen episode day! Get pumped! Brittany is going to wear full 19th century garb (pics or it didn’t happen).
