Michael Buckley Interview:

Raging Sea, World Building, and Lyric (so strong):
-Full disclosure: He was paid to write these books, we joke, but did he get a bonus for that ending…
-Don’t worry the next book will pick up right where Raging Sea ends!
-Research for Undertow involved uncovering tons of interesting mythology about mermaids
-If you want to see some terrifying real-life beasts, google “deep sea creatures”
-The main goal was to create a new mermaid mythology that reflected our world
-Have you ever tried to describe water?
Raging Sea tackles the story set in Undertow on a much larger scale
-What were some of the challenges of expanding the world?
-Aside from sea creatures, much more research comes into play
-If any character can handle the detention center, it’s Lyric
-The world may have mermaids, but the issues are very real
-Lyric praise section- what went into the construction of such a strong female lead?
-Any teasers from the final book? (Spoiler: it sounds great)
-Is Lyric and Fathom’s relationship just too complicated to work?
-“Not more of the same, but more of the different.”

Monsters, Flying Revenant Bears, and Universal Theme Parks?
-Favorite book/movie monsters: Weeping Angels, Freddy Krueger, aliens from Signs, Jeepers Creepers, The Purple Man (Jessica Jones) and zombies
-We may finally have the last nudge needed to get Karen to read Pride and Prejudice
-And since we are on the topic… 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead both terrified people in very different ways
-Some of our favorite mythological creatures include Cerberus, Medusa, and Reassembling Skeletons from Clash of the Titans
-Karen’s favorite creatures include riddle telling Sphinxes and Pegasus
-Let’s create a brand-new type of monster!
-Michael comes up with the most terrifying creature after seeing The Revenant
-Some sage advice: Do not hug unicorns
-“A thousand pound bear just falls out of the sky and mauls you.”
-Puppy Monkey Baby- something for everyone to hate
-Fictional magical creature favorites: Pygmy Puffs, The Littles, and a tangent about The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
