With five PlayStation Classic games announced, there is still room for even more greatness to be jam-packed into the upcoming retro console.
The five PlayStation Classic games announced thusfar are Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Wild Arms, and Final Fantasy VII.
The PlayStation has a long list of classic and amazing games, often kicking off series that are still active today. In the mindset of picking only the best of the best, here are the 15 PlayStation Classic games that need to be included when the console releases this December.
‘Crash Bandicoot’
While simple and a bit basic by today’s standards, this game was once a revolutionary title for its ability to move the player’s character through the 3D plane. It can still be a challenge if you’re new at it, and its inclusion is necessary if not only from a historical standpoint.
‘Crash Team Racing’
One of the first cart racers, Crash Team Racing laid the foundation for what a cart racer needed to do. The items, drifting, zany characters, and story missions would all go on to become themes in games like Sonic All Stars Racing and later Mario Kart games.
‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’
This classic 3D RPG game is a great game to go back and play under the guise of nostalgia glasses. While it’s graphically horrible and the gameplay is infuriatingly bad, there is still fun to be had in the video game adaptation for Harry’s first major motion picture. Fliiiiiiipendo!!!
‘Twisted Metal’
Shooting automatic weapons while driving monster trucks has never been so fun as it was in the Twisted Metal series. It’s a bit of a clunker, but defines the beginning of the now dead Twisted Metal games, making it a necessary inclusion.
‘Spyro the Dragon’
Unlike others on this list, the first of the Spyro series actually stands the test of time. Sure, there is the upcoming Spyro Trilogy game, but there’s nothing quite like playing the original with the retro graphics and sound effects.
‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2’
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 defined what a good skateboarding game could be. This is simply one of the best PlayStation games of all times, and it would be a travesty if the now defunct Tony Hawk series games wasn’t represented in the PlayStation Classic games.
‘Metal Gear Solid’
The sneaky Solid Snake made his debut on Sony’s console, and he is still around stealth killing enemies to this day. His representation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is his latest iteration, but there’s likely hope that we’ll see a new Metal Gear Solid game coming down the pipeline.
‘Castlevania: Symphony of the Night’
The Castlevania series is beloved by many, with Symphony of the Night often referred to as being the best of the entire series. With beautiful 2D graphics and an amazing combat system, Symphony of the Night belongs on any player’s bucket list.
‘Tomb Raider’
The game that started Lara’s adventures was one of monumental importance. Lara was one of gaming’s first female leads, and the game was pretty fun, despite its archaic graphics and so-so dinosaur fighting combat sequences.
‘Tomb Raider 2’
Tomb Raider 2 took everything that the original did right and capitalized on it. The graphics were improved, the locations were more varied, and the overall gameplay felt fresher and tighter, making it one of the best PlayStation games on this list.
‘Resident Evil’
Another historically necessary title for the PlayStation Classic games is the original Resident Evil. While the spooks might be a little dated by what we see in games like The Evil Within and current Resident Evil games, this title still holds some creepy potential for those who have yet to play it.
‘Mega Man Legends’
This title was a bit of a one-off in the Mega Man series games, as there hasn’t really been a game like it since. Somewhat open world and with 3D based combat, Mega Man Legends is an important inclusion for the PlayStation Classic games.
‘Ape Escape’
The Ape Escape series is one of Sony’s long loved and abandoned series, with the first game of the series gracing the PlayStation. Catching runaway monkeys with an oversized net is super fun in this classic game, and is worth a playthrough even to this day. Of note, it was the first game to make it necessary to use the DualShock controller, making the one included with the PlayStation Classic… a bit problematic.
‘PaRappa the Rapper’
The rhythm-based game of video game lore was fun, quirky, and fairly responsive for its time period. The game is one held dearly by many fans, making it a no-brainer for being one of the PlayStation Classic games.
‘Silent Hill’
The first Silent Hill game had some fairly amazing rendered cut-scenes, and was a bit scarier than Resident Evil. The puzzles are hard, and the game has an overbearing sense of looming doom.
The PlayStation Classic releases on December 3, 2018 and retails for $99.99.
