The playboy mogul Hugh Hefner has passed away at the age of 91.
Arguably one of the most recognizable and influential names in pop culture, Hugh Hefner has passed away, dying in his Playboy Mansion home. His company confirmed the news Wednesday.
Hefner was a contentious presence in the media landscape, with CNN noting that he was on one hand “a relic of a sexist era,” and on the other at least partially responsible for helping “the buttoned-up America of the 1950s and early 1960s loosen up a little about sex.”
Hefner himself once told the publication that, “I would like to be remembered as somebody who has changed the world in some positive way, in a social, sexual sense, and I’d be very happy with that.”
Hugh Hefter founded Playboy Magazine in 1953, and it soon grew into a vast, multimedia empire notorious for sex and scandals (and scandalous sex).
The story of the magazine was most recently with the short-lived NBC crime drama The Playboy Club, and an Amazon Original documentary series about Hefner titled American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story is currently in production.
Rest in peace, Hugh Hefner.
