Netflix’s Pieces of Her — an adaptation of Karin Slaughter’s 2018 thriller novel of the same name — has found its leading lady in Toni Collette.
Fresh off the success of Netflix’s Unbelievable and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Deadline yesterday broke the news that Toni Collette is set to star in another Netflix drama series, Pieces of Her, based on the book of the same name from New York Times bestselling and internationally renowned crime author Karin Slaughter.
Pieces of Her is a mother daughter tale that follows Andrea Oliver and her mother Laura, played here by Toni Collette.
The story begins with a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall that suddenly explodes into violence, causing Andrea’s conception of her mother to become forever changed. As figures from her mother’s past start to resurface, Andrea is forced to go on the run and on that journey, begins to piece together the truth of her mother’s previous identity and uncovers secrets of her childhood.
Toni Collette’s Laura is described as the perfect Southern woman — lovely, empathetic, modest, devoted to her work as a speech pathologist and to her disaffected daughter, Andy. However, when the ghosts of Laura’s past put her life in jeopardy, we discover there is more to Laura than meets the eye.
The series boasts an impressive crew along with its leading star, with an all-female creative team of Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, Mad Men), Charlotte Stoudt (Homeland, House of Cards) and Bruna Papandrea (Gone Girl, Big Little Lies, Wild) as executive producers.
Pieces of Her will be written by Charlotte Stoudt, best known for her work on Homeland and House of Cards, with Minkie Spiro, who is currently directing The Plot Against America miniseries based on Philip Roth’s alt-history novel, as the director for all eight episodes of the first season.
