The Byrdes are home to roost in Ozark season 4, and we’ve got you covered on everything you need to know about Netflix’s crime family, including the season 4 release date.
‘Ozark’ season 4 release date
On June 30, 2020, Netflix renewed Ozark for a fourth and final season, but they have not yet announced a premiere date. We can, however, assume it will be quite some time before the final season drops. According to Jason Bateman, Ozark takes a little over a year to make, which would put it at mid-late 2021. However, with the current COVID-19 crisis, many productions are shut down and on pause indefinitely. Depending on how long it goes on for, we may actually be looking at a 2022 release of Ozark season 4.
Though Ozark season 4 may be the end, it’s going down swinging. Netflix also ordered an expanded final season, with 14 episodes split into two parts.
“We’re so happy Netflix recognized the importance of giving Ozark more time to end the Byrdes’ saga right,” said showrunner Chris Mundy. “It’s been such a great adventure for all of us — both on screen and off — so we’re thrilled to get the chance to bring it home in the most fulfilling way possible.”
Last year, Mundy stated that the original idea was for Ozark to last for five seasons, “We’ve always talked about it as five seasons. It could be four, it could be seven … but that always seemed like a good number to us.”
Despite initially planning for five seasons of Ozark, a slightly longer season 4 should be enough to finish the Byrdes’ story well.
‘Ozark’ season 3 finale
Three seasons in, and the Byrde family seems to finally be more in than out of the life of crime they created for themselves.
Overcoming many setbacks, Marty and Wendy have continued to grow their money laundering empire to a pretty successful degree. Not only that, they’ve also proven their willingness to do whatever it takes to keep that empire strong.
By the end of season 3, Marty and Wendy’s casino laundering business is well into operation despite the FBI breathing down their necks. They’ve assured Navarro, however, that they can turn the FBI onto their side.
This still remains to be seen, but the promise seems to be enough for Navarro at the moment. Marty also provides Maya Miller, the lead detective on his case, information on Navarro’s rival cartel.
To prove their loyalty to Navarro and the operation even more, Wendy went so far as to have her brother killed, after he became a liability to their life and business.
Over the course of the season, Ruth Langmore begins a relationship with Wendy’s brother Ben. His murder is the last straw for Ruth, and she quits her job at the casino. As the Byrde’s most loyal friend and partner, it’s a huge blow for them.
Not one to miss an opportunity, Ruth finds herself a potential new partnership with Darlene Snell. Over the course of the season, Darlene has developed a relationship with Ruth’s cousin Wyatt, and is attempting to rebuild her drug enterprise.
As for the cartel lawyer, Helen Pierce, her fortune is short-lived. She undervalued and underestimated the Byrdes, while simultaneously overvaluing herself. Seeing the erratic and unpredictable behaviour of the Byrdes, Helen wrongfully assumed they wouldn’t be able to get a handle on their troubles, and attempted to throw the Byrdes to the wolves and gain power and responsibility over everything Marty and Wendy had done.
Evidently Navarro felt her efforts were more of a hindrance to the operation than beneficial. In the season 3 finale, Navarro invites Marty, Wendy, and Helen to Mexico to attend his son’s baptism. Immediately upon arrival, Navarro shoots Helen and embraces Marty and Wendy, telling them that this is only the beginning.
‘Ozark’ season 4 predictions
There’s been a lot of conflict and turmoil between Marty and Wendy, particularly in season 3. They’re both leaders, albeit in very different ways, and for a while they both felt that their way was the right way. By the end of season 3, however, it would seem the Byrde patriarch and matriarch are finally realizing how much they need each other, both professionally and emotionally.
Ozark season 4 will likely see Marty and Wendy team up in a more cohesive way than they ever have before. Without a middle-man between the Byrdes and Navarro, they’re much more in the line of fire, and mistakes will be more costly. The need to be on the same page is more vital than ever, and it would appear Marty and Wendy know just how much they need each other now.
As for Ruth, her severance from the Byrde’s business doesn’t seem like it will be a huge problem for the Byrdes. They may have lost their right hand, but Ruth doesn’t seem all that keen on attempting to ruin what they started. Ruth has spent the last 3 seasons wanting to get away from her Langmore roots, and has looked to Marty as a surrogate father.
Since the murder of Ben though, Ruth is realizing that maybe being a Langmore isn’t such a bad thing. She’s starting to learn what exactly it is she wants for herself, and understanding that she is in fact capable of attaining that. In season 4, Ruth will most likely join Darlene and Wyatt in rebuilding the Snell drug farm operation, but time will tell whether that’s her true calling or not.
