Oscar Isaac is set to star in another sci-fi epic, Annihilation, directed by Ex Machina‘s Alex Garland.
Isaac has proven that he’s not afraid to take on any type of role, and in fact is known for seeking out new challenges.
Luckily for us, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ex Machina did not quite satiate his desire for the sci-fi genre, as he’s now set to co-star with Natalie Portman in Annihilation.
The movie is an adaptation of James VanderMeer’s novel of the same name, released in 2014 as the first part of a trilogy titled The Southern Reach Trilogy.
The novel is about an all-female team of scientists and scholars (there’s an anthropologist, a surveyor, a biologist, and a psychologist) who set out to investigate an environmental disaster zone.
Natalie Portman will play the lead character, the biologist who narrates the story in the novel, through her field journey entries.
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez play the other three scientists. Oscar Isaac is presumably playing Portman’s husband, as this is the most significant male role in the story.
(Oh boy. Poe Dameron married to Luke Skywalker’s mother? Now there’s a fanfic waiting to happen.)
None of the lead characters are named in VanderMeer’s novel, which is told through the biologist’s field journal entries. We expect the movie version will come with some changes, however; they’ll need to find a way to incorporate Isaac’s character, too, without detracting from the importance of the all-female team.
In the novel, the biologist’s husband dies at the start of the story. In the movie, perhaps he’s still lost out there in the wilderness, and the four women have to go rescue him. Now wouldn’t that be something!?
As mentioned, this awesome-sounding movie will be directed by Alex Garland, who also worked with Oscar Isaac on Ex Machina. The movie is set to begin filming this year, with Den of Geek noting that it could be released as early as 2017.
2017 will also bring us Star Wars: Episode VIII, which will be released in December.
