Orphan Black season 4, episode 4, “From Instinct to Rational Control,” told us who exactly M.K. is, and it’s not entirely surprising.
Earlier in the season I had a theory that M.K. was actually a clone from Helsinki, where a clone massacre killed several of the Project Leda clones and she was the only to survive. Turns out that I was right, and that is where she is from, but it was also way more twisted than I could’ve thought.
Apparently Ferdinand had killed one of M.K.’s closest sisters in a fire he had set to kill all the clones, and M.K.’s real name isn’t even M.K., but rather it was Veera. Along with her close sister, Ferdinand killed four other Leda clones in Helsinki, along with 32 of their friends and family, which goes to show how deadly this whole conspiracy really is. It’s not just the clones in danger here, it’s every single person we have met on the show so far.
But there are some dangers that are closer than we think, like Charlotte’s life being used as a scheme for Neolution to figure out a way around the whole respiratory sickness.
For some reason it’s actually good that she’s the youngest clone to have this disease (for some scientific reason I can’t explain) and therefore they think it is best to let it run its course rather than intervene. I worry about what this might mean for Rachel, since Charlotte is actually cloned from her. My money says that Rachel may say, “Yes, let’s not intervene,” but in the end she’s going to find a way to break Charlotte and herself out of Neolution. Perhaps the hate toward her mother for keeping her locked up is enough to beat out her mother/daughter instincts?
Admittedly, not a lot happened in this episode other than finding out the origins of M.K. (should I call her Veera now? I hate name changes like this in a show!) and also figuring out what the worm does. …Okay, well, we don’t know what the worm does specifically but we do know that it’s introducing foreign DNA/genes into the patient’s body. What are these genes for? I’ve no idea, but if the leader of the DYAD has it in his cheek it can’t be all bad, right?
Those were the biggest mind-blowing pieces of information we got from the episode, but there’s still more “wtf?s” that I haven’t gone over yet. For instance, Donnie, Felix and Alison are all neck deep in their own conspiracy at a fertility clinic, of all places.
I actually sort of love this plotline. Finally Alison Hendrix is getting involved in all the clone drama and Felix is working with her on it! It’s so great seeing the clone who wants nothing to do with this finally get involved in a bigger spy-like way. I’ve no idea what the heck the BrightBorn treatment is or how Neolution is getting involved with the fertility business, but it kind of makes sense given that all of the clones are infertile — maybe the BrightBorn treatment is secretly a treatment they’re testing on normal non-clones before giving it to Project Leda? Either way, I’m extremely happy that Alison is finally doing more than crafts in her craft room.
And last, but most definitely not least, we have Helena. Helena used to have her eggs frozen in liquid nitrogen. Helena forgot that her babies needed liquid nitrogen to stay frozen and viable, and now Helena has buried her non-frozen eggs in the Hendrix’ backyard and ran away from them, for some reason. I’m not really sure why Helena felt the need to run away because Alison and Donnie were doing a great job making sure she felt like part of the family and giving her a place to raise her babies. Without Alison I don’t think she has a chance of raising those twins correctly, so it’ll be interesting to find out where she goes. Please don’t let it be a Prolethean sect again. Please.
