The popular YA mystery-thriller One Of Us Is Lying will be adapted as a TV series for NBC’s upcoming streaming service.
NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service has made its first official pilot order: an adaptation of Karen M. McManus’ One Of Us Is Lying.
The bestselling young-adult mystery-thriller originally had its TV rights bought up in 2017 after a competitive bidding situation. It was set to go into development for the E! network in September of that year, but has now landed in its final home on NBCUniversal’s currently unnamed streaming service, set to launch in April of 2020.
One Of Us Is Lying has been described as The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, and is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive.
According to the official synopsis of the book, the five main characters are:
- Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
- Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
- Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
- Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
- And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Simon, unfortunately, ends up dead before detention ends, and One Of Us Is Lying follows the four remaining students — all of whom are high on the investigators’ suspect list.
The pilot for One Of Us Is Lying will be written by Erica Saleh, who previously wrote for the crime-thriller series Instinct.
Along with One Of Us Is Lying, the NBCU streaming service will also feature the big-budget adaptation of Brave New World, which was originally set to premiere on USA Network, and will be the new home for the third season of comedy A.P. Bio, whose first two seasons aired on NBC.
In addition to the original scripted series, NBCU’s streaming service will also be the streaming home for many of NBC’s legacy content, including fan favorite The Office, which will stream exclusively on the service starting in 2021.
