Once Upon A Time – Season 1 Episode Guide

1×01 Pilot (Emma/multi)

Emma Swan is a bail bonds collector who finds herself face to face with her son Henry, whom she gave up for adoption 10 years ago. Henry brings Emma back to his hometown of Storybrooke, Maine, where he believes that his adoptive mother Regina Mills is an evil fairytale queen who is holding the citizens captive with an evil spell. We learn through flashbacks to the fairytale world that Emma is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, and that she is the only person who can break the spell and return the Storybrooke inhabitants to their former selves.

1×02 The Thing You Love Most (Regina/Evil Queen)

Regina tries to force Emma to permanently leave Storybrooke, while in the fairytale world we learn how the Evil Queen released her curse and sent all the fairytale characters to Storybrooke with no memory of their true identities.

1×03 Snow Falls (Mary Margaret/Snow White)

We learn about Snow White and Prince Charming’s first meeting, as Mary Margaret Blanchard visits a comatose John Doe at Storybrooke General Hospital. When John surprisingly wakes up and disappears, it is up for Mary Margaret to find him while Henry tries to convince Emma that he awoke because he reconnected with his true love.

1×04 The Price of Gold (Ashley/Cinderella)

Mr. Gold hires Emma to find pregnant teenager Ashley Boyd, who he has caught up in a dangerous bargain for her child. In the fairytale world, Cinderella makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin promising to give up her first child, but later goes to great lengths to try to break the contract.

1×05 That Still Small Voice (Archie/Jiminy Cricket)

Emma becomes deputy sheriff and has to deal with a giant sinkhole which appears in Storybrooke. Henry travels down into the hole with Archie Hopper, whose fairytale counterpart Jiminy Cricket’s story is told in flashbacks. In the fairytale world, we see Jiminy’s unhappy childhood and his run-in with Rumpelstiltskin, which has disastrous consequences.

1×06 The Shepherd (David/Prince Charming)

David is torn between staying with his wife and beginning a relationship with Mary Margaret, to whom he is inexplicably drawn. In the fairytale world we learn about Prince Charming’s past, and a surprising twist about his identity is revealed.

1×07 The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (Graham/the Huntsman)

Sheriff Graham begins to experience flashes his former self after an intimate moment with Emma, who still struggles with her knowledge of Graham’s ties to the Mayor. In flashbacks, we learn how the Huntsman came to work for the Queen, and what happened to him when he refused to kill Snow White at her request.

1×08 Desperate Souls (Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin)

Emma goes up against Sidney Glass for the position of Storybrooke’s sheriff, and enters into an uneasy alliance with Mr. Gold to ensure her victory. Rumpelstiltskin’s past is revealed and we learn how he got his magical powers, and the terrible price he had to pay for them.

1×09 True North (Nicholas and Ava/Hansel and Gretel)

Young orphans Ava and Nicholas are caught shoplifting, and Emma sets out to find their father before Regina can put them into the foster care system and thus split them up. Flashbacks tell the story of Hansel and Gretel as they get lost in the forest and are recruited by the Evil Queen to sneak into the Gingerbread house to steal an object from the blind witch who lives there.

1×10 7:15 AM (Mary Margaret/Snow White)

David and Mary Margaret continue to struggle with their feelings for one another as a terrible storm breaks out in Storybrooke. In the fairytale world, Prince James’ wedding to Abigail is approaching and Snow White sneaks into the castle to find him and tell him how she feels. Things don’t go quite as planned, but luckily she runs into Grumpy and the other dwarves.

1×11 Fruit of the Poisonous Tree (Sidney/Mirror)

Sidney Glass is fired as editor of the Daily Mirror and seeks out Emma to help him expose Regina. The story of how his fairytale counterpart was trapped inside the magic mirror is revealed, and we learn what happened between Regina and Snow White’s father King Leopold.

1×12 Skin Deep (Belle)

It’s Valentine’s Day and the girls plan a night out, and David and Mary Margaret have to face some unfortunate truths about their relationship. Mr. Gold’s house is robbed and he is enraged when he learns what was taken, and Emma must race to catch the thief before Gold takes matters into his own hands. In the fairytale world, Belle sacrifices her freedom to become a slave for Rumpelstiltskin in return for the safety of her town, but she is surprised to find herself begin to develop feelings for this beast of a man.

1×13 What Happened to Frederick (David/Prince Charming)

At Mary Margaret’s request, David agrees to tell Kathryn about their affair and end the marriage, but he finds it more difficult than he’d thought it would be. Prince Charming goes on a quest to recover something precious to Abigail, and finds himself facing a dangerous water nymph and being confronted with his feelings for Snow White.

1×14 Dreamy (Leroy/Grumpy)

When the nuns are threatened with eviction from their home, Storybrooke’s resident troublemaker, Leroy teams up with Mary Margaret to help her sell candles during the Miner’s Day Festival while Emma launches an investigation into the sudden disappearance of Kathryn. In fairy-tale land the seven dwarfs are brought into being and Grumpy awakens with romantic feelings toward the clumsy fairy Nova.

1×15 Red Handed (Ruby/Red Riding Hood)

After a falling out with Granny, Ruby joins the Sheriff’s department and Emma’s search for Kathryn which takes a horrifying turn. Meanwhile in fairy-tale land, Red and Granny must protect themselves in a village that is being stalked by a cunningly vicious wolf.

1×16 Heart of Darkness (Mary Margaret/Snow White)

Mary Margaret hires Mr. Gold as her attorney after Emma is forced to arrest her for the suspected murder of Kathryn when the evidence begins to mount against her. In fairy-tale land, Snow White’s personality is changed so drastically by Rumpelstiltskin’s potion that she launches an assassination plot against the Evil Queen.

1×17 Hat Trick (Jefferson/The Mad Hatter)

Emma has to track down Mary Margaret, who escaped from her jail cell, and return her before Regina discovers her missing but falls victim to a mysterious man named Jefferson who she learns has also taken Mary Margaret. In fairy-tale land, the Evil Queen enlists the help of a hat magician, Jefferson, to retrieve something stolen from her.

1×18 Stable Boy (Regina/Evil Queen)

Emma continues to search for evidence that proves Mary Margaret’s innocence and makes a shocking discovery. And in fairy-tale land, Regina’s vendetta against Snow White is revealed when she must choose between true love and a loveless marriage with royalty.

1×19 The Return (Baelfire/Mr.Gold)

Baelfire searches for a way to end the curse that makes Rumpelstiltskin the dark one that will not result in death. Meanwhile in Storybrooke, the mysterious stranger August Booth goes in search of an object belonging to Mr. Gold.

1×20 The Stranger (August/Pinocchio)

In preparation of the Evil Queen’s curse, the Blue Fairy enlists the help of Geppetto whose stipulation for the task threatens all of fairy-tale land. Meanwhile in Storybrooke, Emma turns to August for guidance in defeating Regina after he hints at knowing how but instead gets more than she bargained for.

1×21 An Apple Red as Blood (Regina/Snow White)

Regina believes her curse to be weakening because of Emma and decides to get rid of her, but her actions have unforeseen consequences. In fairy-tale land, Snow White and the seven dwarfs prepare to rescue Prince Charming but are thwarted by the Evil Queen who procures him as a means of destroying Snow White.

1×22 A Land Without Magic (Emma/Prince Charming)

Emma and Regina team up together in order to find a way to save Henry’s life. Meanwhile in fairy-tale land, Prince Charming attempts to escape from the Evil Queen in order to reunite with Snow White not knowing that she has already taken a bite of the poisoned apple.
