The trailer for the political thriller Official Secrets features powerhouse performances from Matt Smith, Keira Knightley, and Ralph Fiennes.
Official Secrets isn’t just a heart-pounding thriller, but it is based on an amazing true story. Even better, its cast is filled with some of our faves.
The first trailer for the film introduces us to the story of Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley), a former translator for the Government Communications Headquarters in England. While her job regularly exposed her to classified materials, when she stumbles upon information about the United States’ efforts to engage in an illegal war with Iraq, she decides to put herself and her family to the hazard by leaking it to the press.
Gun’s story is a truly heart-stopping one. Not only do her actions expose the United States’ efforts to force other nations to support their war with Iraq, but bringing this truth to light puts her and her husband, a Muslim man, into the direct path of the British government.
Despite it all, she doesn’t back down and does everything in her power to stop an illegal war. Judging by what we see in the trailer, Official Secrets will be a heart-pounding story of political intrigue while also telling the story of a badass woman putting it all on the line to do what is right.
Keira Knightley is backed up with some amazing actors in the rest of the cast. Our favorite Time Lord/British Monarch Matt Smith plays Martin Bright, the reporter with whom Gun worked to expose the story of America’s efforts to plunge the world into war with Iraq. Meanwhile, Ralph Fiennes will play Ben Emmerson, the barrister who helps Gun in her legal battle.
Movies about political intrigue and whistle-blowers aren’t anything new, however, Gun’s actions might not be as familiar to audiences — especially American audiences. And with the current political climate in America and the world at large, the message of one woman acting courageously to call out corruption in the government is a very poignant one.
Official Secrets is one you definitely don’t want to miss, and with a stellar cast filled with people like Knightley, Smith, and Fiennes, this movie is going to be amazing.
Thankfully, you don’t have to wait too long for this one to hit theaters. Official Secrets opens in movie theaters on August 30.
